Hey! So, my question deals with how UMass interprets gpa. Do they only look at weighted? From what I've heard, anyone with a 4.00 weighted or over can get in. But, on college board, they report it unweighted and the data there makes the school look a lot harder to get into than I thought. I'm particularly worried about this. I have a 3.44 unweighted, which makes UMass look like a long shot according to College Board. But, I have a 4.46 weighted, which makes it seem more like an easier school to me. This is my first choice and I'm really worried. So, does anyone have any more information on this? How do they look at/report gpa?

They recalculate your gpa based on core courses, adding .5 for honors and 1 for ap. you can look up the specifics on the mass edu site. So you should be in good shape.

Interesting. Do they only look at that? And do they use that to report? I’m not really looking to be chanced, I’m more looking for information.

There is really no way to tell what the heck colleges are reporting as far as gpa’s are concerned. They probably use what students report to them, most schools don’t recalculate, so IMO it seems fairly random. I would assume UMass reports according to their recalculations. My son has a 3.55 UW and when we recalculated it for UMass it was over 4. I wasn’t trying to chance you, just based on your weighted gpa it looks like it would be good on their scale, even after you eliminate non college prep classes, unless your school is using a weighting system that is really different from theirs.

Most schools unweigh your gpa, then factor in a “degree of difficulty” (like Olympic diving!) based on your schedule. Only way they can compare apples to apples.

Hmm, that’s very interesting. I had never heard some of this before. The admissions process is a mystery to me in terms of what they report. Thanks you for your input, I was confused why UMass is said to be easier to get into than a school like BU, but their gpa’s reported are on the same level. I’m hoping that they are reporting it in terms of the the weighted because, otherwise, the 41% of incoming students with 3.75+ gpa is just terrifying. I wish they were more specific

It’s weighted!
