Deferred to Waitlisted

I thought that Harvard didn't evaluate apps more than twice so Im wondering how this is a possibility. Any insight would be nice.

They evaluate applications as often as they need to–and in your case you should hope for at least once more! You did not get rejected – of course you can do that for yourself by saying no to the wait list – between 25-33% do.

They mean it when they say it is unranked and that means they will read yours again. I have, of course no way of knowing, but an educated guess is that you have at least one real fan in the committee–most likely your regional rep-- who is pushing hard for you-- it hasn’t yet been enough to get over the extremely high hurdle but she or he is still trying for you. If you can deal with the psychological torture and bifurcated sense of anticipation for a month or two more, it may just pay off for you.

Once you’ve been deferred, you’re a member of the regular pool just like the people who applied RD, and so can receive any of the same outcomes as them.

I was deferred EA and now waitlisted. It’s an interesting feeling…
