@just_nag mine did not say I needed to submit them, but did say that strong grades may make me more favorable. With that being said and getting all A’s, I want to send them
Does anyone know what deferral letter is supposed to be the “better one,” if any? They both seem relatively similar to me, and both ask for the submission of 7th semester grades. The two letters are on page 7 of this thread.
@Straightoutta7 I would send them.
I got the “send 7th semester grades” one and it didn’t say deferred in it and my portal was never updated.
So when it comes to that whole “successful applicants only send what we ask” line, are all of you guys ignoring that (if it was included in your decision letter) and sending an email reaffirming your interest anyway?
We’re following their advice and forwarding “strong fall semester grades” only.
letters of continued interest are very important. it distinguishes you from those who do only the bare minimum.
I would strongly recommend sending a letter of intent if Michigan is your first choice. An even better option would be to contact your admissions counselor and tell them directly. I know people that have done this and it really pays off.
@jt1216 There are many students who feel it necessary to send extra essays, recommendations, videos of ECs, etc. When they say “only send the materials we request” they mean what is required to complete the application. They don’t care or have the time to look at the extra stuff, and they probably get annoyed by that. However, sending a letter of intent can’t hurt you, especially if it is meaningful and concise. They don’t want another “Why Michigan” essay. Keep it short and sweet or talk to an admissions counselor.
On behalf of our Director Erica Sanders and myself, I thank you for your continued interest in the University of Michigan. Please be assured that it will be noted in my evaluation of your application. The University received a record breaking 32,500 early action applications this year, so admission was very competitive. Unfortunately, your recalculated GPA of a 3.6 with multiple Bs and a few Cs in your 10th and 11th grade academic work made you less competitive than our top candidates. Last year’s average for our admitted class was a 3.87.
Before we can make a final decision on your application we need to further evaluate the strength of the regular decision applicants, as well as the yield rate of our admitted students to determine if we have space for you in the freshman class. Please submit your 1st semester senior year grades so they can be considered as we continue to assess your application. Other than your transcript, there is nothing further we need from you at this time.
As stated in your deferral letter, we will have a final admissions decision for you in early April. Again, admission to the University of Michigan is the most competitive it has ever been this year, so although I encourage all deferred students to keep the University of Michigan as an option, I would also encourage you to explore the other opportunities available to you. Please feel free to contact me if you have any additional questions or concerns.
Is this a bad sign??? I’m freaking out. Also how should I respond??
Sending a letter of cont int will NOT hurt you ever. They say not to send more bc they are accustomed to getting all kinds of ridiculous stuff now from deferrals (Look! I got 100% on physics! My name was in the paper for basketball!)
If you have a new and better test score, send it. If it is your #1 choice, tell them.
@renwa I think your counselor is basically telling you that your gpa is not competitive enough, and you should definitely keep other options open as your chances are slim.
I mentioned in the letter of cont int about my SAT score (1480) and my internship at IIT (#1 university in India) and my internship where I taught orphans English. Also my grades dropped bc i switched schools but progressively got better again. How should I respond to the email?
Should I say I would 100% attend and should I mention that my dad’s an alumni?
Yes to both @renwa
Honestly, you may have already said too much. Cont int should not be a rehash of your app.
You received a “form” response is all.
The SAT came after and my internships were not in my original app.
Then send it in
Any body got any info as to how soon decisions of deffered students ll come
No concrete info…guessing based on last year’s thread that they could begin Feb 3rd. Last year it was Feb 5th onwards
