Just received a reply back from my letter of interest as well. This snippet was sort of interesting:
“The information will be considered as we make decisions for the few remaining spots we have available. Admission to the University of Michigan is very competitive and in the past several years due to the high volume of applicants & the strong yield rate among our admitted students, we have not had a great deal of space to offer admission to the deferred pool of applicants. I encourage all deferred students to keep the University of Michigan as an option, but also to also explore the other opportunities available to them.”
My mom is friends with a counselor for a private school in my area (less than 1 hour from Ann Arbor) and she said that she recommends to her students that If they are deferred to email their admissions counselors like once every 10 days and she gave me a template to format the email.
On another note, when I got deferred I tweeted out a picture of my deferral message with the #victors2021 tag and Michigan Engineering replied “congrats, you’re a Mengineer!”
Captmag - the University received over 30,000 applications for early decision alone, and will receive more than 55,000 total. Probably more than 25,000 students have just been deferred, many if not most of them sending emails wanting to know what they can do to get in. Are you really surprised that the admissions counselor did not personally address your questions? (Most of the answers are available on the website or from your guidance counselor.) Amissions is also turning their attention to regular decision applications. This is what comes with the territory of applying to a huge school that receives tens of thousands of applications.
Came across this link. It seems to read that the second deferral letter specifically requesting 7th semester grades indicates an early-admission application is still open. The other letter would be considered deferred. What do you think?
@098123Student Am not sure what you mean by saying - early-admission appln is still open. I think irrespective of what each of 3 odd types of deferral letters say…all of them do say that the applicant has indeed been deferred. So, I dont think it means anything more than what it says - which in this case means…they would like to see 7th semester grades. My 2 cents
@just_nag The second letter does not use the word deferred within it’s text and this link we are discussing has a “deferred” hyper-link taking you off-page as someone who has not been requested to send in 7th semester grades. Was thinking it meant there was a specific reason to return to the application; that any type of decision has not yet been reached.
The word deferred is blue. Click on it and it takes you to the Deferred FAQ page.
The request of grades could simply mean the applicant’s submitted grades are on the cusp. Either way, looks like a decision for any us still falls after Feb 1.
It could be on the cusp or in some cases it probably means that they like the applicant but want to see if he/she has continued to work hard and improved their performance to become a stronger applicant in the pool. Everything is a guess at this point. Good Luck!
If i have finished an online course two weeks before my semester ends (AP Physics C) and got an A-, do you guys think I should send this to U of M now, or just wait two and a half/three weeks for them to get it on my updated transcripts? What would you guys do?
@Straightoutta7 If your deferral letter asked for 7th semester grades, send this as well. If your letter said - The successful candidates send us only what we need, dont send anything…let the process take its course. That would be my 2 cents
