Deferral means only that a decision on you will be made after all applications are in so they can compare you to entire pool of applicants. Majority of those deferred will end up being admitted. Your apparent weakness is class rank which is somewhat below the usual middle 50% range for LAS. You still have a chance.

last year they accepted 118 out of 183 applicants from my school

I think it depends on the school. For engineering and business, the percents of accepted students who were originally deferred are much lower than for LAS, for example. Seeing as you applied to LAS and not engin/bus, you still have a chance.

Actually business and engineering defer a lot and admit many deferred so the chances after deferral really are not that much different.

i heard they only accept the top 10% of the applicant pool early, the majority of the rest get deferred and then admitted.

is that true?

is it different for in state and out state

93% of students attending U of I are from in-state, so it's hard to tell
i've heard that engin/bus schools like to have a full comparison before admitting many of its students, so i would'nt be surprised that both schools admit more after deferring

I was deferred for engineering
I'm in-state...
Do you guys think I might be able to get in?

There is no admit 10% early rule. Some, particularly business like to hold off on significant majority of decisions until the end. Engineering also but somewhat less in holding off than business. Moreover, even in LAS different programs have different preferences, some filling a high percentage early, others not and what those preferences are can change. It makes no difference if OOS. About 10% of last year's admitted freshman were either OOS or international but that is because only about 10% of those who applied to UIUC were OOS and international, i.e., admission rates for OOS were about the same as in-state. Also, OOS application percentages vary widely among the colleges -- in LAS usually only about 5% of the applicants are OOS/international but for engineering it is often higher than 20%.

I know so many people who were deferred by U of I this year. I know of at least 3 people who were accepted by University of Chicago, but deferred by U of I. Don't worry. You'll probably get in later.

What are my D's chances after being deferred?

ACT: 29

Top 21% of class (competitive Chicago suburban h.s. with 4,000 students)

Excellent essay
Strong ECs
Strong work experience
Strong volunteer experience
Applied LAS/Psychology (indicating she'd also consider another program)
