deferred

i was deferred and tulane is my top choice. any advice on how to go from deferred to accepted?

There has been a lot written on this in other threads, but the bottom line is to somehow let Tulane know it is your #1 choice and hopefully you have had a really good semester that is about over. Visiting the school (again?) and talking directly to your admissions counselor would be ideal, I would think. Might be a good investment considering the stakes.

thank you for your response! I e-mailed the rep for my area telling him how much i love tulane, he said it was helpful and hes add it to my file. He also told me, however, that they havent been able to admit anyone who is much under the average ACT/SAT scores. he strongly recommended i retake the ACT.

I will be graduating after first semester this year. Durning the spring semester I will be taking 2 classes at my local community college. Do you think these classes (assuming i Do well) could help me? i will try to send a progress report to tulane.

thank you so much for all your help!!

what was your ACT score?

His ACT was 26 (posted on another thread).

Unfortunately, by the time Tulane would see grades from the community college course, it would be too late, I would think. Your best bet is indeed to retake the ACT and/or take the SAT, ASAP. If there is a February date for each, that should be in time to get the scores to Tulane for consideration and also gives you some time to use the study aids/practice tests ahead of time. I think that is the most promising path for you.

my child just received a letter of deferral (dated 1/3/11) until the regular review period this spring. Since the letter was mailed, my child has improved the ACT score from 25 to 28 (scores from a DEC act test. Also, many letters or recommendation arrived after the letter was sent.
His fall grades are 3A’s and 2B’s. My child plays multiple sports, keyboards for twelve years and is an eagle scout. My son is also a Presidential Scholar. He attended a medical forum visit in Boston and a government forum in Washington DC. AP courses and honors classes. GPA - 3.67. He attends a private high school.
He visited Tulane once in November and is taking a day off from school next week to visit a second time. He has made an appointment with a admissions counselor on that day. Tulane is his #1 choice. He will tell the admissions representative how much he wants to be admitted. What else can he say or do to enhance his chances of being excepted. He has registered to take the ACT one more time in Feb and the results (if improved) should arrive at Tulane by March 10.

What are his chances of being admitted?

Going from 25 to 28 was a big step. First semester grades were very good. He is seeing admissions next week. I really cannot think of anything else he can do, except what you say about taking the ACT again.

What is a Presidential Scholar? I know there is a national program by that name, but I know that isn’t what you are referring to. In any case, he has done all the right things given his stats. Best of luck!

it is the national program, Presidential Classroom Scholar.

Presidential Classroom Scholar selects students nominated by teachers in the students high school. The trips are generally 10 to 14 days long (paid by student) and focus on career options. Communications and Journalism, Intelligence and National Security, Science, Technology and Public Policy, Global Health and the Environment, Future World Leaders Summit, Energy Technologies and the Environment and Law, Justice and Human Services are some of the many current programs.
My son attended a Medical Forum in Boston as well as a Governmental Forum in Washington DC during President Obama’s inauguration. My son was also invited to attend the Intelligence and National Security Forum this February. He was invited to go to China (several weeks) with the same organization this past summer but did not attend.

Should he be placing these offers in his file with admissions. He has already listed the ones he actually attended.

without having seen my sons application and knowing only what i have shared above, what do you think his chances are…<50% or >50%

That sounds like a great program! I would just be careful to call it by its full name, the Presidential Classroom Scholars, because there is another thing called the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program [U.S</a>. Presidential Scholars Program Fact Sheet](U.S. Presidential Scholars Program Fact Sheet) that could be easily confused with what you are talking about otherwise, and you don’t want it to look like you are trying to mislead people, which of course you are not. It is a shame he couldn’t do the China thing, my D is really looking forward to going.

As far as his chances, it is of course impossible to know. I will just say that typically a 28 ACT puts him around the 25th percentile for Tulane, but his UW GPA is right at or maybe a bit above the average for Tulane. It’s a pretty close call O would think, maybe right at the 50-50 mark. Not what you wanted to hear I know, it is almost better to know for sure even if it is negative. But that seems to be where he is, at least IMO.

thanks for the help

got excepted today. coming down tomorrow to look around.

Congrats on the acceptance.

got accepted (:

I emailed my rep saying how much i loved tulane and how i wish to attend there. I will also be retaking the ACT in feb. is there anything else you think i could do?

Thank you for your help!

I can’t think of anything else.

ok thank you so much for your help!
