Along with increased tuition, UNC has stated they will be dropping some degree programs. Does anyone have any info on which ones will be cut? Thanks.

Sorry- I think this posted to the wrong place.

Or not. For reason I thought this new thread posted under the University of Alabama…weird!

Here’s all I could find. It’s a hot topic locally. UNC School of the Arts may lose its film school!!!

The tuition increase wasn’t too surprising, but I think there’s going to be more opposition if they start cutting some degree programs IMO.

Thanks, Lady Di. I Googled & didn’t find much.

I knew a tuition hike was coming statewide, but they haven’t divulged much about program cuts. This would definitely have an impact on decisions to attend, I’m sure. At least at NCSU, I’m fairly confident that with the new Engineering bldg it is likely safe. My son is also interested in the Clinical Laboratory Science program at UNC, though he applied for Applied Science/Biomedical Engineering track. He was hoping to go for one or both. Not sir if they would keep the BME track since State has an accredited school already & they are trying to eliminate duplicate programs.

Mommydeerest, I was surprised, too, that more details were not revealed. As you and Harambee say, the tuition increase isn’t surprising, but if program cuts are coming, it would really help to know which programs are being cut!

I feel badly for those poor kids in the linguistics doctoral program at UNC Chapel Hill. If they’re at dissertation stage, will they at least be allowed to finish out the program? I sure hope so!

Usually - when programs are cut, there are some allowances for grandfathering in students in the programs. Hope that would be the case.

So one thing to clarify is that 60 programs in the entire UNC SYSTEM are being cut, not 60 programs at Chapel Hill. There are 17 schools in the system. I think 4 programs have been cut at Chapel Hill, the highest profile one being the linguistics doctoral program. I can’t for the life of me remember what the other three are.

Chapel Hill’s programs should, for the most part, be safe. Right now the ones that are being cut are underperforming departments or really small ones. Chapel Hill being the flagship school for the state doesn’t have many of those.

Yes, the links I provided noted that the cuts are across all campuses. I’m especially concerned about the UNCSA film program, which I believe is quite popular.

Starting on page 4 of this file lists the programs cut at each of the UNC system campuses
