Degree Question

I'd really like to go to college for Musical Theatre but also be able to be certified as a teacher. I live in Florida and plan to go to college in Florida. I've only been training for 4 years. I'm a senior in HS now... so my questions:

1.What do i major in?
2.What are some good, easy MT programs to get into in Fla?
3.Is it my disadvantage to only been training/working for 4 yearS?

1) There are a lot of schools that you can major in theater or something along those lines, then do a 5 year fast-track MFA program in education.

2) Go to the FAQ sticky and look at "the big list". There are a lot of non-audition schools in FL as I recall

3) No.

You probably would want to look at schools that offer a BA in theater with opportunities to take acting, dance and voice and which regularly stage musicals as part of their production program, and which also have a strong education program. I am suggesting a BA program because a BFA program is really intended to be a very focused professional training program and in general leave very little room, if any, to take the ed courses you would need for teacher certification. A BA theater program would give you the ability to double major in education. In addition, as the previous poster suggested, you want a non-audition theater program since the audition element makes admission to a theater program a roll of the dice no matter where you apply. At a non-audition BA program, as long as you meet the academic profile of students who are admitted, you have a good shot at getting in.

There are not many MFA degrees in education. An MFA is usually a professional practical degree giving you intense ttaining to enter the profession. It is also a "terminal" degree for university/ college teaching. Most education degrees are an MEd.. some programs offer an MA in Theatre Ed. These degree programs would prepare you for HS or elementary/ middle school teaching... many are linked to teacher certification and student teaching opportunities.

I agree with MichaelNKat that you might be better off looking for a BA program that does musicals. The certification rules for teachers are different in every state... some states offer a certification in theatre, other require you to be certified in a "hard" subject like English or History and take additional classes in theatre to obtain a Theatre "endorsement" on your certification.

If you want to stay in FL. I suggest that you contact the FL certification office for this information. Also contact the education and theatre departments at schools in which you are interested.
