Delaying Transfer to UCI

Hello. I just had a question with regards to transferring to UCI.

So a couple of months ago, I got accepted to UCI as a Junior for Psychology. However, my parents notified me that I would not be able to transfer there this upcoming fall because of some family issues.

So my question is, is there any way I can kind of delay my admission to the winter or spring quarter instead? I tried emailing and asking admissions, but they told me to send a letter to the Director of Admissions, which I am about to do soon, to try to appeal for an exception for my current situation. I really want to go to UCI already, especially since I already got accepted. I hope I do not have to wait until next year and reapply because I feel like I would be wasting time that I could have spent towards graduating already at UCI.

What are my chances of being able to pull this off? Does anyone have any idea? Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for all the help by the way. I really appreciate it :).

For the record, deferment requests for reasons regarding financial situations or general family complications are 99.9999% of the time rejected. They only consider the “unforeseen turn of events” that would result in you physically not being able to attend the UC (deployment, severe PERSONAL -as in your own, usually not your family’s unless it is your spouse/dependent- documented medical situations) as the only plausible reason to be deferred. Good luck.

Thank you guys for your replies.

Actually, my parents were the one who told me I couldn’t go this semester, which was why I was hoping to be there by next quarter instead. So are you guys saying that they won’t delay admissions for UCI even just for one quarter? Sorry about re-asking the question. I just wanted to make sure.

The reason is that I do not want to have to wait another whole year just because my parents did not allow me to go at the fall quarter.

Is there a compelling reason they won’t allow you to go? I mean you are a Junior, which mean you probably are 20. Are they holding the financial reins?

That is one of the main problems :(. Also, they want me to stay home for a little bit more because they still need me to do a couple of things before I head out to college in SoCal at UCI, since I live in NorCal in the Bay Area.

I know its weird, but I feel like I have to follow them since it is my responsibility to.

For that reason, UCI will not grant you a deferment. You would have to reapply for Fall '13. Regardless to whether you go to UCI this year or apply again for next year, the cost for 2 years at UCI will be basically the same. Loans, grants, and outside scholarships exist for a reason. Tell your parents that they’re the ones who are delaying your education by an entire year by making you feel as if you have to make the choice to stay.

For some reason, I’m under the assumption that you’re Asian. Now that I saw all the threads that you’ve posted, it makes me wonder if you even know if you want to major in Psych or Bio or if your parents are pushing you towards one of those. You should major in what you’re interested in.

Yeah, I’m Asian :).

But with what you said with regards to the majors, that is my own problem. See, I want to graduate with a degree in some type of science degree in UCI, which was one of the main reasons I chose to go with the Bio program at UCI. However, after researching, I noticed that majority of bio transfers in UCI are basically transferred as Sophomores because of the many lower-level work that must be completed, and must spend almost 3 years after transfer before graduating (Is it like this for all UC’s and Bio majors at those UC’s?). This is what I have a problem with.

I don’t know if its worth doing bio at UCI but waiting another 3 years before graduating (making my undergraduate college years total to 6), or just doing another major that I originally started and was accepted in at UCI, which was psychology, that I can finish in about a year in a half with summer classes.

With the psychology degree, I can just take pre-med classes with it, and maybe apply for either graduate school to maybe get a Masters on something (doesn’t have to be psychology), or go to Med School (if I have the right grades). The only thing about graduating with a psychology degree is that, even if I was to graduate sooner (1 year of private school + 2 years of CC + about 1 1/2 years at UCI with summer classes) compared to doing Bio at UCI, I probably won’t have internship, job, and research opportunities that I could have gotten as a Bio major at UCI, especially since I heard that the bio program at UCI really helps the student with getting jobs and internships as soon as they graduate.

So what do you guys recommend I do? I love both majors equally, but the finishing/graduating time is what really confuses me. Should I go with Bio in UCI which takes a longer time but helps me with getting jobs/internships right after graduating, or should I go with psychology, which takes a shorter time to finish but will not get me much without something like a Masters degree.

Unless there’s any other majors, or maybe even other UC’s or schools, you guys can suggest (which I would greatly appreciate by the way :D), what do you guys think I should do instead?

Thank you once again for your responses. I greatly appreciate them all.

excuse me for being heartless and perhaps rude but, seriously, your family is preventing you from attending UC Irvine?

Do you know how many human bodies, mainly high school kids would kill to be given a spot to UC Irvine?

I’m a bit confused & reading these weird eluding reasons, sounds like you need to start tasting the art of growing up and making your own decisions, but maybe thats just me being an unintentional a-hole.

as one of my fellow college students, i just think you deserve the best for yourself and not whats best for your parents.

Yes, I understand what you’re saying. Well, I guess I kind of misinformed you guys a bit.

Its not that my parents don’t want me to go. I don’t know why I put that. That is my mistake, and I am sorry. I’m choosing not to go yet because there’s been some problems right now, and I know they need me for just a little, tiny bit longer. They don’t want to tell me, so I’m deciding to stay because I feel its my responsibility to help. It’s my decision, not my parents’. It is a complicated situation, so I cannot really explain much anymore without going on a longer rant.

But we’re getting off the topic now with all the parent talk. I actually just received a letters from admission, stating that I would not be able to defer my admissions, so I guess I can’t do that. Just today, actually, after looking at all the replies you guys have sent me, I just spoke with my parents, and they said that if I really wanted to, I should go ahead and transfer. So now I’m trying to see if there is anything I can do to catch up and transfer, with three weeks before classes start for UCI. I’m sending transcripts and stuff, so I’ll just see how it goes from there.

Now I’m just hoping that I can still get in. I know I am VERY late, but I’ve been speaking with an advisor from the Psychology department in UCI, and she stated that if I get my hold removed from my account by sending my transcripts, I can still try to enroll for classes this upcoming quarter.

But yeah, I think I got enough answers now. Thanks once again for all the replies. All of you guys helped a bunch. Its now up to me to fix it. Thanks once again.

you can also attend one quarter, and then file a leave of absence and be able to return later.
