Dell 700m vs. the 6000

Right now thess are the two I'm dithering between. I really like the 700m, cute, light, with all the features I need. However, I know some peopple have said its keyboard is too small or the screen. So - does anyone out there have a 700m? Are those really valid concerns? I'm going to be using it as my sole PC for the next four years - typing, playing music, watching DVDs, etc. I need to able to use all the time! On the other hand, my concern about the larger 6000 is that it is too bulky. Any 6000 users out there to tell me different? I'm going to be traveling a lot with (as in, aboard, I'm going to college in Ireland and will proably bring it back and forth with me, as well as within Ireland, traveling to see relatives). Any help or reviews of these machines would be uber-helpful. Thanks.

My son just got the 6000 and loves it. The screen is bright, clear and plenty large enough for daily use and movies. Although the keyboard is full size, he intends to get a standard keyboard (he is 6'3" and a big guy). The sound seemed okay to me, but he got additional speakers. He intends to use it for gaming, too. It seemed a little heavy to me, but I guess any laptop is heavier than the paper notebook I used to carry! Maybe you could take your bag and add books of the same weight as the computer. This way you could carry it around and see how it feels.

I have a 6000, I don't think it's too big. The 700m is certainly more portable, but it looks to me like it would be uncomfortable to use as a primary PC.

If you're going to do a lot of traveling, then you'll be happy with the 700m. It is almost just as powerful at the 6000, and does just about the same things. All you sacrifice is the nice big screen and keyboard (speaking of which, the small keyboard is the only constant complaint I've heard about the 700m)

I have the 700m, and the keyboard does take a little getting used to, but its not bad. I like this computer a lot

I have a 6000 and I love it! I don't think it's too big, especially if you are going to use a backpack or case to carry it in.

sawred, do you use your 700m as your primary pc?

bump - anymore ideas from people who use either of these laptops. sorry to be a pain, but i'm very conflicted.

I got a 6000 and its SWEET!

I have a 6000 and I think it's great. :] If you have any specific questions, PM me.

What's the big appeal of Dell? I don't see it. Can someone explain?

it's cheap

how bout the 600m? its light and portable but the screen is a little bigger therefore the keyboard should be larger as well, right?

im trying to decide between 700m and 600m

Yeah the 700m is my primary pc, but my friend has a 600m, and thats nice too, bigger keyboard and what not. I like the small size of mine though.

If you want a portable computer, the 600m is great. If you're concerned about screen/keyboard size, you should consider purchasing a separate monitor and keyboard, so when you're using your computer in your dorm room, it won't feel so small.

I probably will do that if I find it uncomfortable. Some people say they've totally gotten used to it and others never do, first I'll see how I respond to the 700m's features. I caved in and bought it last night. Great deal.

For $1,078 I got,
Intel® Pentium® M Processor 725 (1.60 GHz/400MHz FSB)
Intel® PRO/Wireless 2200 Internal Wireless (802.11 b/g, 54Mbps)
512MB DDR SDRAM 1 Dimm
80G
CD burner, and DVD player (I didn't see in the point in the DVD-R for me, I only watch 'em, not burn them).
Dell threw in a free printer and for the whole price I have above, I got it taxed and shipped. I used one of those 40% coupons and saved about $700! Nice deal.

Good to hear, Shadowlands. I see you got a really good deal! Enjoy your new laptop! :)

Thanks, redski59!

i was bout to buy a 600m for 1128 with following specs

pentium m 745 1.8 ghz w/ 32mb ati
1 gb ddr sdram 2 dimm
60 gb hd
cd/dvd burner
intel wireless

and the free printer

but my dad talked me out of it saying the things that really help the speed of a laptop is hardrive rpm and video card, so i should try and look for a laptop with atleast 5400 rpm and 64 mb video card.

the dell's only have 4200 rpm hd for the 600m and 700m model and only 32 mb memory. another i would have prefered is the pentium m 750 or any chip with 533 mhz frontside bus and the ddr2 memory.

you think my dad is right or are his expectations are too high and i should have jumped on the dell deal.

You definitely need to tell your dad that and let him see it for himself.
