computers

Someone asked in another post what laptops people were getting, and I thought it was a really good question, since I'm currently in the market. I'm getting a dell, but I'm not sure which one to get yet. So, what are you guys getting and/or what do you suggest?

I have a dell inspiron 600m. i think it's dell's 2nd lightest laptop. i chose weight over all the graphics and fancy shmancy stuff cause i don't really need a computer cept for internet and word and powerpoint, etc. and i figured if i do get new rez, i'm gonna have to carry the laptop around with me for long periods of time so i didn't feel like getting a heavy duty laptop

My parents bought one a few weeks ago when our desktop crashed, and I'm bringing it to McGill. It's an HP, pentium 4 processor and I got it on sale. It's a good computer, but a bit heavier than some of the others.

I'm considering getting the dell inspiron 600m, mostly because of the weight too. I don't really like the widescreens because they're way too chunky and I get tired just thinking about having to lug that thing around. Dell inspiron is small but apparently it also has pretty good capabilities in terms of graphics and sound and whatever. You can always customize it to have a lot of RAM and ROM or whatever. I'm not that great with computers, but it sounds pretty good to me. I just didn't really like the dark grey on the surface of the keyboard area. I know it sounds picky, but I'm going to be looking at it for the next few years. Either that or I take the Toshiba that we just bought a couple months ago. Upgrade it a bit, and it'll be pretty good, light too.

portability matters...unless ur in a program like architecture where they tell you what kind of laptop you need to get.

15 inches is the biggest i'd recommend. make sure that wireless is built in.. briteview (or likewise) screens are great for movie watching in dorms (you can see the screen from all angles).

oh i forgot to mention that if you live in new rez and decided to cheap out you could do without internet cause the ballroom ("converted" to study rooms and etc) in the basement and the lobby all are covered by wireless. i think some 2nd floor ppl can receive it too... actually i know some people who live off campus on peel who get wireless.. haha absolute evil.

I'm just clicks away from getting the dell inspiron 600m. I'm getting the port replicator too so that it'll feel more like a desktop when I'm in my room. I'm going to bring my normal keyboard and mouse and everything too. I'm loving it already. It's lighter than a textbook!

I'm getting the LG LM50... it's 2.4kg, and comes with a whole bunch of pre-installed software including Norton Anti-Virus, and a bunch of Adobe stuff. It's pretty nice :)

like photoshop and indesign? or just the acrobat reader things?- i'm undecided about which computer i'm getting, altho i'm pretty sure of the cellphone and that i'm taking my printer

i am gonna order my laptop from HP america, they got these really awesome deals for laptops...4 GHZ, 2 GB ram, 400 GB space, amazing graphics card, etc....for just around US$2,000...which is nothing since the US exchange rate is so low against the swiss franc right now...

sounds amazing..but do u really need that much? Heck, that's one amazing price! What's wrong with it then?

holy crap, which laptop is that??

some HP laptop...i couldnt find it online yet...

my friend just got his a couple of days ago. i have ask him for the site....but it is extremely heavy and the battery lasts only like an hour or two..so i am not completely sure i want it...

yeah..sounds like mine..it's a HP too....i bought it a year ago with entertainment in mind, so it has this 17" screen and wieghs a ton. I reckon i'm going to keep it, but portability is the major problem I have, plus the battery seriously sucks, lasts an hour and a half max. Does ne1 know how the mcgill pc's on campus r like? like spec-wise?

i am also considering this sony one...

although its not nearly as powerful as the HP one..it is light and long battery life...

I got a Dell Inspiron 1150. The screen is 15", has 60 GB HDD, wireless card. I think it's a pretty good combination between portability and power. My dad gave me a sidepack for it, and it kinda weighs down the shoulder, so if I can I'm thinking of getting a backpack for it. Has anyone tried one of these?

Also, does anyone have mp3 players? I decided against iPod and went more windows media-friendly Creative Zen Micro 5GB :D

i have a dell dj 20 gb..costs the same as an ipod, but decided against an ipod as every1 has one nowadays and i didn't want to be like every1 else ;) plus it's software sucks for pc...the dell runs on the same os as the zen and is pretty stable...a bit chunky though..good bargain with headphones, remote and belkin case all for 250 bucks

I got my laptop today :) It's a LG LM50

Pimpcess05: It only has Adobe Acrobat Reader... on the upside, it comes with Power DVD5, which is the newest kickass system for watching DVD's on your laptop.

I have a iRiver H320 MP3 Player. It was like $100 cheaper than an iPod Photo and it does pictures, movies, recordings and radio.

that's hot- i hear about the iRiver ALL THE TIME (still love my iPod tho)

I was wary of the iPod because of the fact that it only plays wavs? or something. I didnt want to have to convert a lot of what I have. I don't know the specifics of it but I'd rather circumvent any problems like that by just getting a different brand (and 1 GB more for the same price :D)
