getting an Dell Inspirion 700m

Hey

i just ordered this new computer for college. After going through freshman year, i didn't want to have a desktop anymore (couldn't concentrate in my room). i can't wait to get it.

cost around 1.3 k

oh yeah, i forgot to ask

does anyone else have this comp? what are your feelings about it?

I have one, it works well. It's small, not too heavy. The screen collects dust but it isn't a big problem. I like it.

i had one...but i went the opposite way

i moved from a 700m to a desktop because my eyesight is horrid and i couldn't see anything on that screen (it was clear...just not big enough for me)

but the actual system itself had nothing wrong with it

How is the battery life on the 700m? Is it necessary to have a spare for extended outings?

the battery is good. i have the big battery and it lasts 4 hours, although i've never used it for that long. Also, don't expect to be able to play any games on it, unless it's like pong or something.

yea i just got one... i like it a ton! The screen is a little small and some of the keys are a little closer together. I've gotten used to that in less than a week though. Now my desktop seems huge and annoying. Good choice

I hope that you have good eyesight, since a 12 inch widescreen display is going to look very small. If worst comes to worst, you can buy an external monitor and connect your notebook to that.

you get used to the small display, and its perfect cuz it weighs so little. i love it, i'm typing on it right now with no problem

One thing to mention, the Latitude D410 is the equivalent to the Inspiron 700m, except that you get better build quality and tech support in the U.S., not overseas! The price is slightly higher, but with the education discount, it shouldn't be that much of a difference.

if you really want to go dell then at least do yourself a favor and get the latitude line.

And you dont get used to the small display, you accept it. It's small and if you want a small display, thats great but it cant replace a large display.

I don't believe that Dell offers an educational discount for their Latitude line. At least they don't offer it to the students at the school that I will be attending.

Well, usually the coupons out there are better than the educational discounts anyways.

Sometimes Dell has coupons for the Small Business store, where you can get the Latitude line.

The general Dell University store (not necessarily your school's program site) has both discounted Inspirons and Latitudes.
http://www1.us.dell.com/content/default.aspx?c=us&cs=2240&l=en&s=eep

In my general experience, if you want to buy from Dell's business line, the best deals are on Dell's Small Business site. For the company name, just put in your name again, I have not had problems doing this in the past.

Coupons for their Latitude line are very, very, very rare. When you see one, you need to hope onto it. There is one available today, but I don't remember what it is. Otherwise, you need to subscribe to their e-mail list to get coupons for their products.

Of course, if you are looking at the business line and you are a student, check out your school's bookstore.

IBM also offers a discount for students. http://www.ibm.com/education/us

Dell has ran a deal three times this year so far for $750 off selected laptops $1499+

My 700m came out to be $1666, but I paid only $949.

It is very portable and the scree is crisp, although tiny.
I found the keyboards to be kinda awkward at first...I still prefer the 600m's keyboard, but im sure ill adapt

Under the options i got the 8 cell battery and last night I was at 65% power and I still had between 3 and 4 hours of battery life left.

yea i was gonna buy with their last 750 off promotion but an hour before the promotion began, they jacked up the prices, so it wasnt such a good deal anymore. It was still cheap, but not a steal. Im sure there will be awesome deals before school starts for laptops

IAmTheEvilest, thank you so much for posting the link to the IBM/Lenovo education site!!!!! I have been trying to find those education discounts!

i've had the 700m since december and i absolutely love it. since it's widescreen, i'm also able to watch movies on it without a problem, and i got used to the more condensed keyboard quickly. several of my friends have commented that they don't like my laptop as much since it's so small, but i love the size, as i'm able to bring it anywhere and put it into a tote bag without a problem. if you're looking for a small computer with all of the regular features, this is definitely a great one!

be cautious about Reppettettivve Strain Injuries with laptop keyboards (extra carefull with the small ones).

The full size ones are not so much a problem motionwise (and the IBM TrackPoint style mouse is the most ergonomic mouse you can get because you dont have to leave the typing position) but most people have their laptops in a terrible typing position. Either the keyboard is too high or the screen is too low (generating bad posture). If you are going to be working for any length of time, either get an external keyboard and put the laptop where the monitor sould be or get an external monitor as well.
