DELL Laptop e1505

How popular is this laptop at Cornell. I know it is popular everywhere, but I am in the library right now and 4 out of 5 people are using it. I almost want to buy a new laptop because of this fact alone. haha

is that the one they use for rentals at the library?

I see a huge number of Macs on campus, they're perhaps the majority. I'm not surprised, Cornell is full of smart people :)

wooo....go Mac!!!

it's so dangerous that the campus store sells Mac and Mac accessories....I can't stop buying stuff for my laptop :-)

Please, if you're going to go PC, at least consider a ThinkPad. At least those are respectably well-built/designed machines that are almost comparable to Apple's offerings.

Macs are the way to go; I love my MacBook Pro! (Though I'd probably get a MacBook Air today, those things are AMAZING). In some lecture halls, you'd seriously think Apple has a 80% laptop marketshare... :)

oh man...I played with the MacBook Air at the store today.....I want it sooooooo badly. Maybe I'll treat myself when I go to med school :-D

The MacBook Air looks nice, but would only serve purpose if you travel a lot. Like if you take notes on it in class. There are a lot of limitations for it to be your sole pc/laptop etc.

I am going to definitely make the switch when Apple releases a Tablet. Hopefully it is soon.

^^^yeah...I agree. I carry my PowerBook around to class and it's a pain

GET A MACBOOK PRO. end of story

my friends dell (the exact same brand) just broke yesterday and shes going mac as of thursday.

JUST DO IT! you'll never look back to a pc again!

Yeah I have had mine for almost 2 years. Which is like a record for this model. haha. I even dropped it a few times.

I want a Mac, I like their style, I really want a tablet though. I seen prototypes for Mac Tablet Patent online, hopefully it's real and not just a rumor.

sniff sniff... smells like tools. mac's are overrated and only useful if your in journo or some type of art. otherwise, you become aware of its limitations and incompatibilities pretty fast.

sure theyre clunkier and in some cases harder use, but a regular lappy is the way to go.

and macbook air is the worlds most expensive frisbee. half the power, and double the price of any decent 1000 dollar laptop. that thing is WEAK, even if you're just looking for something to get by (which should NOT cost you upscale of 3000 bucks). the only thing promising about it is the still drive, but I would wait for those to develope some more in a couple years.

"mac's are overrated"
eh, millions of people can't ALL be wrong.

"only useful if your in journo or some type of art"
I don't think any of us here are in journalism or art. I'm not, I still think macs are superior.

"you become aware of its limitations and incompatibilities pretty fast."
After 5 years, I'm still looking for its "limitations" and I haven't ever had a single program that's been incompatible. I'm sure these programs exist, but I'm also sure they're not worth my time. Besides, it's easier than ever to run windows within a mac (and note: the fastest computer for running windows is a Mac).

"sure theyre clunkier"
Maybe if you're blind.

"and in some cases harder use"
Correction: in no cases are they ever harder. I have significant experience with both Macs and PC's - the only thing that's harder with a Mac is trying to reason why you even bothered with a PC.

"eh, millions of people can't ALL be wrong."
Actually they are, hence the term OVERrated

"I don't think any of us here are in journalism or art. I'm not, I still think macs are superior."
-As a business major, PC's cater to my needs (given. Windows is a great professional tool)
-My engineering friends tell me macs serve no purpose in anything they do. Many course-required modeling programs aren't compatible with MAC OS. They all recommend tablet PC's for note-taking and quick drafting.
-Completely useless for Hotelies. Microcomp requires MS Office 2007. My friend with a macbook is CONSTANTLY having to borrow my laptop because the mac version of Office '07 is abysmal.

"note: the fastest computer for running windows is a Mac"
What? Don't know where you heard that but it's completely false. The same mac-wielding hotelie friend attempted to install XP on both his G5 and his macbook pro, it failed miserably both times. It's an unbelievably buggy and complicated procedure. And keep in mind that both MAC OS and Windows get installed and in some cases run simultaneously. Thats two operating systems in one computer, and thats a crapload of RAM.

Those last two comments were directed at windows-based laptops. maybe my change in tone was too subtle.

So if my daughter will be a Hotelie should we get a PC and have her leave her MacBook home?

Mac Office 2008 is amazing....

I had a PC laptop for a few years...and it's decline is speed was rather apparent...even after making significant upgrades to try and speed it up. I've had my PowerBook for 4 years and except for a few scratches and a hard drive crash that was 100% my fault...it's running as amazingly well as it did the day I pulled it out of the box.

We love the macs too... I just don't want everything to be a compatibility issue for my daughter at Cornell. And the hard drive on her macbook just crashed, and we have absolutely no idea why!

IRONY: "MacBook Pro Is the Fastest Windows Vista Notebook":

Irony: MacBook Pro Is the Fastest Windows Vista Notebook

PC World - In Pictures: The Most Notable Notebooks of 2007

My friend has a 17" MacBook Pro, yet he runs Vista almost exclusively on it. Why, I don't know, but that's besides the point. It's very snappy.

"My friend with a macbook is CONSTANTLY having to borrow my laptop because the mac version of Office '07 is abysmal."

I'll admit Office '08 for Mac could use some stability improvements, but I'd think the blame hardly lies on Apple's part. As for compatibility, I'm pretty sure your argument that you can't run Windows Office '07 applications on a Office '08-equipped Mac is flawed (unless my Mac is one-of-a-kind). I did think Office v.X was very stable, and am looking forward to any updates on MICROSOFT's part to stabilize Office '08 for Mac. And as a student, I appreciate the note-taking capability of Word '08 bundled into office already.

As for the MacBook Air, to each his own. I've played around with it extensively, and all I'll say is that if I waited my MBP purchase, I would almost definitely have gotten the MBA. It suits my needs; I have an iCurve+BT keyboard+BT mouse set up already, and I almost rarely access the SuperDrive (I'd still get the external, however). However, I'd agree that the MBA is not for everyone, and that it has a specific market. Some students may happen to fall into that category, including myself. There is no denying it's impressive aesthetic and practical dimensions, IMO.

I switched a while ago from PCs to Macs; however, I often encourage such PC-inclined persons to consider IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad notebooks. In my opinion, I appreciate their quality construction, legendary durability and customer service, and CEO/no-nonsense business looks. My roommate plans to purchase the ThinkPad X300, which is their $2,800 response to the MBA; I look forward to the comparisons shortly.

justamom...does your daughter have applecare? I had applecare... I just called them, explained what happened and the next day they sent me a box for shipping and I had my laptop back 4 days later...no joke.

Also...depending on how old your daughter's laptop it...she can install Windows on it and won't have to worry about compatibility issues. If you go this route...install XP...Cornell's software suites aren't compatible with Vista.

I'm using a Dell laptop right now, have had it for three years, can't stand it anymore. I'm excited about getting a new laptop for college, and will probably lean towards a ThinkPad or some type of HP. I will never buy another Dell laptop again, for the record. But that's really no bearing on their current hardware, this here Inspiron 8600 is 3 years old.

I will never buy a Mac, because it feels more like a social movement than a computer, and it's not in my blood to be trendy at all. I'd rather just get a PC that's completely compatible and isn't a Dell.

(For not-easily-offended PC users, perhaps it will amuse you to read this satirical article:
One thing PC users can do that Mac users can't...)

Well, I don't really think buying a Mac has anything to do with being "trendy" or a part of any social movement, but to each his own. What ThinkPad are you thinking about getting?

And be careful about saying "never", because you never know... :)

my mbp has parallels. this allows me to have 2 computers in one...a mac and a pc. and i learned that the mac with parallels works the pc programs BETTER than a pc does with its own stuff.
