Hey guys, I'm currently deciding on which laptop I should buy. I'm looking for one that can play Blu-Ray, has a good picture quality, and since I'm not really a hardcore gamer, I only play mild online games such as Heroes of Newerth.

First, there's the MUCH cheaper Dell: XPS 1645 (priced at $1600). It's a bit big, but I don't think I'd mind the size.
Pros: -good monitor + built-in BluRay drive.
Cons: -I've heard a bunch, a hell lot of complains on this product. It overheats, it throttles. The screen blocks the ventilation path, etc.

Then, there's the expensive and cool Vaio Z128 (priced at $2870). It's extremely light (1,4kg), designed using carbon fibre. It has higher specs. And I like it better. However, the price makes me think twice on buying this one.

Now, what do you guys think about Dell? Does it suck, as reviews say? Will I encounter problems with it if I stay away from hardcore games? Thanks =)

I don’t see why you would do that. The Macbook Pro is a good computer…but there are certainly better ones available. The Vaio would kick the Macbook Pro out of the building.

Granted, it’s probably overkill. But I don’t understand the love for Macs around here…not to make it a PC vs. Mac thing but they aren’t the best computers out there.

I hae two friends that have the XPS, neither have had any problems. One does a lot of gaming, keeps it on a cooling pad though. But your mileage may vary.

the vaio would definitely be better… but its also a lot costlier.

The 1645 has overheating issues… i’m on a 1647 right now that i got for cheap refurb from dell outlet using their 15% off coupon and i love it, so i would suggest looking into the 1647 instead.

The screen on this blows my external monitor’s out of the water… 1080p as well, so you could get one with a bluray player and enjoy it to the fullest

The Studio XPS would be great, but there are a lot of issues with the build quality. $2870 for a laptop is overkill, in my opinion, if you’re not going to use it to it’s full ability.

Honestly, if you aren’t too dead set on either one of these machines, you could list down what specs you want and I could suggest a computer that has a much cheaper price than $2870.

Yeah, I do think vaio is an overkill as well. My parents don’t really mind, 'cause I’ve lived with just a 1GB RAM desktop for these past 6 years without any upgrade, but I do feel like it’s a waste…

What I mainly look for:

windows 7

4-8GB RAM

Intel i-7 (or i-5 is okay as well)

Internal Blu-ray player, HDMI output, 1080p screen.

At least 3-4 hours of REAL battery life.

You really don’t need a blu-ray drive. Unless you’ve got a sweet 50"+ high-def TV and make liberal use of that HDMI port. And you’re paying a super-premium for that carbon fiber.

I have the XPS and it is an amazing lap top. Perfect graphics, nice size, fast, intel, windows 7, etc… The only problem is that yes, it overheats sometimes. Other than that, I love it! It takes literally under a minute to load up once you turn on the computer. Usually computers take about 5 minutes. The battery life usually lasts about 4 hours.
