im decidng on which laptop to get for college and i would appreciate some opnions. NOTE: I have to get a Dell. and im not going for an XPS.

im looking at the Inspiron E1505 and the 710M. personally im leaning toward the E1505 because of the larger screen and the current free upgrade to a dual core processor. and even if the deal expires before i buy i still have the option to upgrade. also the base price is about $200 cheaper.

Are you planning to use processor-intensive applications (Mathematica, Maple) or things that require a large amount of hard drive space (art programs)? Otherwise get the cheaper one.

How is the SONY VAIO laptops? They look extremely portable and lightweight and nice. I will have programs like MatLab/Mathematica on it. Is the Sony Vaio good for this? It may have the portability but does it have the power?

I just got my new E1505 yesterday and now that ive reinstalled the os to get rid of all the extra "complimentary" dell software it is awesome and sup and uber cool and.... yeh get that one and you can pm me if you have any questions!

I would like to say that the new macbook pros own everything else on the market right now... with that said, vaios are overpriced and i would go with the E1505

wow, that is kinda weak... new intel core duo has two processors on one chip, allowing (with the right programming) dual processing of information. I dont think too many software programs are written to support this function yet though.. also it super boosts speed on things like sound and video editing

my new one i just got which is awesome ran for about six hours maybe alittle while more with the wifi off pretty awesome oh yeh its the nine cell battery or what ever

I don't know about the Dell ones, but I just wanted to throw out there that if anyone is going to a school that doesn't mandate a particular brand, HP laptops are by far the best value.

I got a floor model HP at OfficeMax for $800:

-1.6GHz Pentium Mobile with Centrino
-1 GB memory
-80 GB hard drive
- DVD burner
- 15.1" widescreen with TruBrite
-XP professional

I think that's a pretty sweet deal. The compaq laptops (really HP) are also very well priced. Sorry to get off topic but for anyone looking for a good value in a laptop, HP is the way to go.
