I've been told that at A&M "Demonstrated Interest" is a big plus for acceptance. By "Demonstrated Interest" I mean attending events, campus visits...stuff like that. I'm told there's a place on the A&M application to check off things you have done to prove this "interest".

Does UT have an equivalent of this? My son is instate and not in the top 10%, but still hoping to have a shot at UT based on his test scores & rigorous curriculum. I know the odds are bleak, but please let me know if this (or any other ideas) could help him get in. I would rather him not CAP, but I'm aware that is an option.

According to the Common Data Set http://www.utexas.edu/academic/oir/cds/current_cds/CDS2008-2009.pdf

UT says applicant’s interest is “considered.” Who knows how much. Texas Common App isn’t up for another two weeks, so I don’t kniow whether there are boxes to check for events attended, etc.

Thanks. One other question about the timing. Even if he got his application (and other docs) in to UT in the early fall what is the earliest he could expect to find out if he is admitted? I’m guessing they would need to figure out how many top 10%ers they have first. Any idea?

Last year there was no demonstrated interest box on the UT specific app. There was for A&M.

It’s rolling admission. I was admitted like two weeks after applying in November, but I was also top 10%. The only guarantee is that you will know by April 1st. I know a non-top 10% friend of mine didn’t get his for months after he applied (he was rejected).

WTK, I believe that the notification date will be earlier than April 1 this year since the application deadline has been moved up to December 15.

Demonstrated interest does not really matter at UT in the slightest. I don’t think it’s even included in the list of other criteria in the UT admissions formula.

It can never hurt, though.
