Denied Early Decision

Hey members, sadly I was denied Early Decision to the University at Buffalo. UB sent me a letter saying that they will automatically put me in the regular admission pool and are requesting my mid-year grades which are average as of right now. My question is since they denied me for ED what are my chances that they will accept me regular decision.

Umm first of all they did not deny you they deffered you. BIG DIFFERENCE!!! And second it wouldn’t hurt you as long as your current grades are good. That means they are just iffy on you

This isn’t a denial. It is a deferral. That is a good thing. If they really hadn’t liked you at all, you would have been flat-out denied.

Not being on the admissions committee at U of B, none of us can predict your chances at admission from the RD pool. What we can do though, is to advise you to put together a list of other colleges and universities to apply to and then crank out those applications. You do not want U of B to be the only place on your list.

I honestly thought that if you get denied ED you automatically get put into the normal decision pool, I might be wrong though but anyways thanks for all your help and quick responses!

Does anyone recommend retaking my SAT for the 4th time to try to improve my scores. I am trying to think of anything that will help UB push me over the fence when it comes to there decision.

It may be different at University of Buffalo, but pretty much every other school with give you one of three decisions: (1) accepted ED, (2) deferred to RD, (3) rejected.

I see no benefit in taking any standardized test more than three times.

Re-read your letter carefully. Were you “deferred” or “denied”. If you were denied then you will not be reconsidered this admissions cycle.

Dear XXX, (I am paraphrasing)
Thanks for your interest in UB and the opportunity to review your ED application. Following a preliminary examination of your academic credentials, the admissions committee has determined that we are unable to accept you early decision but will review you as a regular admission candidate.

We will need your mid year grades as soon as they are available.

That’s basically all it said.

Another friend of mine got it who has better grades then me said he called the admissions office and they said he was basically deferred, he didn’t ask what his chances where or anything like that of course.

You basically were defferred even if they did not flat out write that you were defferred. The point is that yes, they saw weaknesses in your applications. However, this also means that they saw some strength in your application because they did not reject you. They want to see the grades that you received in your classes this year and hopefully you did well. If I were you, I would take the SAT again just so you increase the strength of your application further. Also, it would be great to show that you got involved in more volunteer opportunities and received a good amount of volunteer hours. All of these are ways to strengthen your application further. Good luck!

You were deferred - you are in the normal RD pool, but they know that you have shown them the love. Work hard to get the best grades you can this semester. inform the Admission Comm. If you get any awards or other recognition. We are pulling for you. Best of luck!

I am surprised that nobody mentioned the ACT. Sometimes students do significantly better on the ACT than they do on the SAT. Colleges will take the better of the scores. Since you have taken the SAT 4 times I would say try to take the ACT and see if you can get a better score on it.

My son took both the ACT and the SAT. He scored MUCH higher on the ACT than the SAT. You may see a similar difference.

By the way I just had to tell you, I love your username haha

The thing is I have 4 quarters in my school a grade for each quarter. UB requested my first 2 quarter grades, for my first quarter I had a 50% in English (don’t ask) but in my second quarter I am going to get around a 90%, same goes with my AP Euro class, first quarter was a 60% but second quarter will be a 83%. Lets just say that for my first quarter I have been working full time so I can have some money to put towards my college tuition, after realizing how far my grades went down I quit my job and started focusing more on studying etc… Just hope UB will realize that.
