Hi guys,
So today I found out I didn't get into Loyola Marymount University unfortunately. SCU is my top choice, then LMU. I am afraid that SCU may be harder to get into and that I won't get into either of my top choices.

My ACT is low at a 23
Not sure what my GPA is, I go to a college prep school that doesn't do GPA, only has grades, but I had mostly C's first year, C's and B's second year, B's third year, and A's and B's Senior year.
2 internships, a job (freshman year), community service, played in orchestra 4 years, School Paper 3 years, vice president of Organic NY club, member of Breast Cancer Awareness.
I have a really good essay and I think good recommendations.
I'm from New York, part Hispanic, not full, and didn't apply for financial aid.
I also emailed an SCU admissions rep because after my campus visit I had a lot more to say about what I liked about SCU.

I live with my dad in New York and want to go to a warm state for college with family near by so I applied to mostly schools in Cali because it's awesome! But I am really nervous now after hearing back from LMU. I'm worried my ACT score is too low to get into Santa Clara especially.

I know Santa Clara has a high EA acceptance rate, which gets my hopes up, but there ACT is also higher. So has anyone heard back from SCU yet? Do I have a decent chance at getting admitted? And how hard is it to get into compared with LMU?

Thanks for the responses. Best of luck to all of you!

Your ACT is unfortunately way too low, to even stand a chance one should get at least a 25 and even that’s pushing it. Also, your “GPA” is on the low side as well. If I had to guess you might have a 2.8, which again is on the low side - the average GPA is around a 3.5-3.8. LMU is a lot easier to get into than Santa Clara, so even though you are a minority, and have pretty good EC’s, I’m afraid that might not be enough.

To put it simply, if you didn’t get into LMU, you have almost no chance of getting into SCU.

:( I’m sorry to be such a downer, but sometimes people need a reality check. HOWEVER, that being said, when it comes to free advice, you get what you pay for. Anything is possible I guess.

(I’d still start looking for safer schools).

The other posts may be right, but if it does happen, try and look into appealing for the schools as soon as you hear the news. Sometimes appealing is the second chance you can get from the admissions to reconsider you. Check their websites or call the school and see what you can do to get another chance at consideration. Heck, I’ve heard of my neighbor driving to the college he was rejected from and showing up to the admissions to reconsider him, and in the end he got in. The school he begged entry for was UC Irvine in the 1990s. I know LA and Santa Clara are a long way from New York, but if you happen to be in the area over winter break why not try it if you really want to go to these schools.

alright well thanks for your responses guys. Yeah I am definitely not thrilled about my ACT scores. I’m just not good at taking it at all. I really liked SCU, but if I didn’t get int, there are other schools I like that I can probably get into that sound and looked like good schools I would still like to attend. I’m hoping for the best but expecting the worst. Do any of you know anything about University of the Pacific? And I will look into Concordia University. Thanks for your responses, hope you guys have a great holiday. I’m so happy to be on break =)

U of Pacific was recommended to us by our school counselor. She had good things to say. I checked out the website and they seem to have a lot of majors and also paid co-op opportunities as part of the curriculum. Look into it, good luck. An hour from SF.

Why don’y you consider University of San Francisco which is a possible for you or UCsanfran, also look into University of San Diego which is a nice school, pretty new, and not too too selective. Also look into Pepperdine University, it is a beautiful school, right in Malibu, and it is also jesuit.

I applied to University of San Diego, but I did think that was more selective too. I would be really happy to go to school there. I’m disappointed I wasn’t accepted to SCU, but I can’t say I was overly surprised. I want to find out more about University of the Pacific. I don’t really like the UC schools much because it’s harder to get accepted if you’re out of state and I want to stick to smaller schools. @pixeljig what have you heard about it?
I’m staying optimistic. If I can attend college in California in a nice campus at a decent school I will be happy. And people do transfer too.

UOP is the oldest university west of the Mississippi. Small school located in the middle of Stockton California (nowhere near the “pacific” ocean). Used in many movies as the west coast ivy league looking school. Feeder school to McGeorge Law School (ranked as one of the best law schools in California located in Sacramento about 45 minutes away). Great pharmacy school and has a great dental school in S.F. Expensive but great campus life. Not much to do in Stockton but most students stay on campus. About an hour and half from S.F about two hour to Tahoe (nicely located). Allot of fog in winter months great spring weather, hot summers. The students to teacher ratio about 20:1. All my professors in political science were PHD’s from Harvard or Yale. No longer a football program so you have to find things to do on weekends in the fall. A good basketball program and was nationally ranked in girls volleyball at one point and other sports. Alex Spanos (Forbes riches 500 people in U.S. and owner of the S.D. Chargers) is a big contributor to the school. UOP bought Delta community college property next to it and expanded after I graduated. Justice Kennedy taught at McGeorge law school. Stockton California rank first in foreclosed residental property safety issues in Stockton but the campus is safe. Allot of rich families send their kids there and expect to have them safe.

thanks for the info. How did you like attending school there? Were the students friendly? Were there a lot of clubs and recreational activities? Was the staff helpful?

yorkyankee, I lived in Sacramento, which is only 45 minutes away, its alot different than 3,500 miles. I had a great time attending UOP. There are fraternities and sororities. Students were friendly very diverisifed with alot of latin students because it has a school specifically for latin students (Covell College). Professors very approachable since the ratio of students to teacher is low. Remember I graduated in 75 and I am sure its changed.

I was in a boat similar to your’s in high school. I had positively awful grades my first two years, but strong ECs, a great essay and a 29 on the ACT. Sadly, I lowballed during admissions and wound up at a school I hated. (Even still, I probably would have been rejected as a first time freshman.) I arrived at SCU as a sophomore.

If you’re interested in SCU and the Bay Area, why not attend another school and then apply for transfer? I recommend picking the best school for you with the intent to transfer if necessary.

As others have said, start applying to other schools that are a better fit for your stats ASAP.

OP, I know several kids who go to Dominican University of California (also a small, private Catholic U) and they all seem to love it there. Google and check it out. One of the kids I know (he’s a junior now) had the same ACT score as you; he’s a neighbor and his mom and I are good friends. Dominican is located about 45 min. north of San Francisco, in Marin County. I’ve been there for concerts and to hear various speakers, also have gone to their lacrosse games (crazy fun). Very pretty area, worth a look. Good luck to you.

The main downside of Dominician is that the name recognition is almost zero. Even in the South Bay area, a large number of people have not heard of it. On the East Coast, I bet very few people have.

Clarification: UC san francisco is a GRADUATE school, and one of the top medical institutions in the nation. Sadly, most people seem to think that it’s the UC that ranks lower than everyone else.

UoP might even be a bit of a reach; Inhighly suggest University of San Francisco.

I wouldn’t make conclusions just yet though. Maybe admissions officers at SCU might see somehing hey like in your application.

Also, don’t appeals generally work only in public school systems? Because the public system must admit the people with highest stats first because they have to be fair in the system… I have never heard of a PRIVATE school changing decisions for an appeal letter, and even if it does happen the chances of being successful are so slim that you might as well spend the time on something else…

A few thoughts on the above recommendations…my son got an appeal form from USC (4.25 GPA, 2100 SAT) and we tossed it. Private college counselor told us that we should have sent it in…try appealing to a private college…it may work!

to Prepurm1216…Pepperdine is under the Church of Christ…not a Jesuit school and Pepperdine is definately more selective than U of San Diego and Santa Clara.
