Denied one term, accepted next?

Hi everyone! I have a question that may be silly for those knowledgeable in the college world.

BUT:

Let's say I applied to a school for the Spring 2014 term, but was denied. (This hasn't happened, I am still pending responses from my transfer schools.) Within their rejection, can they defer me for another term?

Like, "hey, you're not good enough for spring, but you'll do fine for summer!"

I know it sounds ridiculous, but I am just wondering...

And another question which I just remembered:

Can I apply for the following term?

If not, why? If so… why? If yes, would it be to reflect a change of grades or some sort of improvement?

Thanks in advance.

Rather than “reject” you, they can and do admit some students for a later term. I don’t know if they do so for transfers, but I know of many schools that admit freshmen for Spring start - they know they will have space on campus for more students in the spring due to some freshmen who don’t stay, and due to December graduates. A few schools allow students to start in the fall if they start at a satellite campus, or study abroad - again, because they don’t have space on campus for them, but do want them as students (just not quite as much as the students they accept outright).

Since the fall term is a new application year, yes you can apply again. You would be compared to an entirely new set of applicants, but if you haven’t done anything to improve you application, you’re likely to be rejected again.

I doubt they would defer you to another term. Usually I think of deferred interms of early admissions. But there is really nothing to stop you from applying again. Obviously you would need to show improvement or circumstance must change to make the admissions committee render a positive outcome.
