Hello everyone, I’m new to this forum and im looking to hopefully get a rational answer for my case. I was looking to transfer into FSU for fall '16.My major is industrial engineer. I am currently in Florida International University, as a mechanical engineer, because FIU does not offer industrial engineer. I started FIU fall '15 to take classes that I thought would apply towards my requirements for the FSU industrial engineer program. I attended Miami Dade College for 3 and a half years and earned 90 credits witha 3.7 GPA. My current GPA in FIU is 3.9 ( through 11 credits). Originally, I got denied because I made a mistake and I put I was an incoming transfer student looking to get a second bachelors, which is wrong as I am still missing pretty much all my upper division courses. After speaking to admissions and my program mapping coordinator, I was informed that I wouldve been denied anyhow because I have too many credits. This doesn’t make sense to me however, and I’m trying to look for second opinions on this, as I feel I have been treated unfairly by program coordinator. I was actually accepted into FSU about a year and half ago when I was coming out of community college. I couldn’t attend due to personal and financial reasons. I decided I would start FIU in the meantime, in order to knock off courses and not waste time. After hearing I was denied, I immediately emailed my program mapping coordinator, who I was told is the only person that could review this and change the decision. She originally didnt respond to my email or my calls, After seeing this, I emailed the person in charge of my program. I explained to him my situation, and he responded that he didn’t understand why i had been denied, but that this wasn’t his area. He forward my email to an advisor, who also said he didn’t understand why I had been denied, but explained to me I would have to directly speak with my mapping coordinator. He forward the email to her, and she responded to this. She vaguely explained to me I had been denied because of my mistake, but that regardless I wouldve been denied for my excess credits. I formally replied to her explaining to her my situation, how I did not know having too many credits would’ve affected my decision, and that I had been accepted a year ago. She did not respond to this. Understandably, I was very lost and confused, as I was looking for answer. For the next two weeks she did not pick up my phone calls, or respond to my emails or voicemail that I left her. I emailed admissions again explaining to them how she wasn’t responding and that I found this to be very rude and unprofessional. They forward the email to her, and once again, she respond to this, She repeated herself again, and at the end of the email responded to the comment I made to admissions about her being unprofessional. I really do not feel like I’m getting fair judgement, I feel like this lady is being really subjective. Many of the staff at FSU who I have spoken to have told me that the excess credits shouldnt be a problem, considering I have outstanding grades. I am looking to take this to someone else , but I do not know who. I was thinking of Dean of Student Affairs, but I’m not sure if this correspond to them. Has anyone had this kind of experience in any other universities ? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!
As long it is not on their website (information regarding about excess credit for transfers) then keep on fighting.
It sounds as if you have taken quite a number of engineering classes already. Does FSU have a requirement for number of major credits/core credits/elective credits taken at their institution in order to receive an FSU degree? I have had friends transfer schools after sophomore+ year and have to retake major classes in order to meet the “hours taken on campus” requirement of their new school. Think of it. No school --especially a prestigious one–wants a student to transfer in, take only a few classes and then be granted a degree. Would you really be a product of the FSU engineering school only by only taking 3-4 major classes there?
Nah man, im missing about 53 credits, pretty much all my upper division major required courses. Really, only engineering courses Ive taken are thermodynamics, engineering economy, and engineer analysis. I get what you’re saying, and if that were my case I would completely understand. Who would you guys suggest I speak to that over her position?
Miami-Dade = 90 credits (Why so many credits beyond 60?)
FIU = 11 credits (so far) + (Spring '16 semester credits at FIU)
FSU = 53 credits needed
Total credits = 154 + (Spring '16 semester credits at FIU)
So or later you will be hit will a surcharge for for excess credits over 120 or 120*X (don’t remember the formula). This is a huge expense above normal tuition. Are you receiving Pell Grant or any other form of federal aid? Are you approaching the cap for any of them?
Why not finish your Mechanical Engineering degree at FIU (ME and IE seem to share the same core requirements)? It is a much more versatile engineering degree than IE, with much better job prospect. You can get a industrial engineering position with a ME degree. Have you completed the following courses and are they required for transfer:?
Another option available is to apply for Industrial Engineering at FAMU, with the hope they would over look your excess credit. They share the same engineering program. I do not understand the excess credit requirement for transfer. You realize that with a deficit of over 53 credits, you are about 3.5 years away from graduation (almost 8 years to get an undergraduate degree)?
That is 3.5 semesters and that translates into about another 1.5 - 2-years (That is 6 - 6.5 years total).
