Denied university park

Hey everyone my son was denied today. It is very saddening to know that PSU is in such a state of dealing with competition. They told me that my son is able to appeal the decision which I think he will try to do. He is ok... disappointed. He thinks that it just "wasn't meant to be". I am going to make some phone calls and work on this... he really thought he had a chance. I know that a branch is always an option and that is great for some. He really was welcoming the size and grandness of the campus right off the bat. So I don't think this will be an option for him. One thing is fortunate, however, he was admitted to The University Of Pittsburgh in the College of Business way back in October.

psuslum80, I so sorry. That is very disappointing. I am sure that your son will be happy with whatever decision he makes. My daughter loves Pitt and it is a great campus. Best of luck and thank you for all your contributions to this board!

psuslum80, so sorrry that you're son didnt get into up. From what I rememeber I thought his stats were very good . High GPA and decent sat. How are they basing their admissions? It just doesn't seem to make sense. We feel your disappointment and are sorry it didn't work out. Good luck to him on wherever he chooses to go.

Thanks guys, I appreciate your thoughts and support :-) Funny, in the same stack of mail came a flyer today from Pitt, "cordially inviting" him to attend a day for admitted students. It is almost like sending us a messge that this school saw something in him from the start, more then just his numbers.... He has a quieter personality and so the size of Pitt ( 17,000) may be just be the ticket. If we appeal PSU it would be like PITT is second rate for him and I don't want it to be that way for him.... Who knows....Maybe we'll have two magnets on our car, one from PSU and the other PITT> I will keep you posted.

whats your son's major and what school did he apply to?

DUS...
10 char

So sorry. =(
And if you don't mind me asking, what major did he apply to & what were his stats?

what did your denied envelope look like? big one or just a snail one?

well i remembered from when my daughter (now a jr. at psu) was accepted>> the word "CONGRATULATIONS !" is written on the bottom. this envelope did not have that !

um...so was it still a big envelope?

yeah i was denied today, too. everything happens for a reason, though. :)

sorry to hear... What were your stats if you dont mind?

psualum80,
just a note of encouragement.. S1 had to choose between PSU and Pitt. He chose Pitt. I was disappointed but he is now a junior and is very happy at Pitt. I did tell him as a PSU alum I could not bring myself to wear a Pitt T-shirt ( so he got my husband one instead).
Now S2 is trying to decide , so I am once again hoping for PSU and I am looking for the T-shirt that says" Penn State vs Pitt a family divided"
Good luck

his stats: 4.23 W 3.52 UW 1720 best SAT sitting.....1790 best combined

Denied today :-( Large white envelope with nothing on the outside; return address UP. Told me I could accept a branch campus.

Applied summer DUS (-no second choice campus) , 93 GPA with honors and APs and dad an alumni :-( but only a 1660/2400 on SATs (can't take standardized tests!!!!)

Very sad; was first choice...........Not a good year for those in the 'yellow dots' Largest graduating class in US high school history, and high applications to state schools due to economy--nothing in my favor :=(.........

Good luck everyone who hasn't heard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

^ Out of 2400 right?

pittpsumom-- i really liked your post..it actually made me teary eyed ! what does your son like about Pitt ? Why did he choose it over Penn State ?My son wanted a more campus-like setting than the city but we have never visited Pitt. We will plan on it in Feb.

psualum80,
My older son chose Pitt because he wanted a city life which surprised me because we do not live in a city. But Pitt does have a campus and even though it is in Pittsburgh it is not really in the heart of the city. The Towers are where the freshman live and is very close to most of the buildings. Upper campus has all the new dorms ( which are amazing) but are much farther away. Kind of like East halls but up a hugh hill. There is a great park nearby and there is so much culture. The program ( science) is great ,so even though I was disappointed at first I realized after the first year that Pitt was a good fit for S1.
Pitt has Saturday tours run by college students which is a great way to get your questions answered.
Hope this helps
keep your fingers crossed for S2... We are... Penn State

I"ve very sorry to hear so many were denied today. My D2 was accepted to UP today. There was nothing written on the outside of the envelope, no "congratulations" or anything, so I think the lack of that word on the envelope is a false indicator.

If it gives anyone comfort regarding the branch campuses, my D2 has a sibling - D1 - who is in her second year at PSU-Lehigh Valley. She loves it so much she changed her major to one of the few that would allow her to finish her four years at LV. In other words, she has turned down the automatic move to UP for the fall, despite the fact that her little sister may be a freshman there at the same time. She doesn't care about football, sororities or any of that stuff. The LV campus has been a great experience for D1 and UP may or may not become a great experience for D2.

To the parent who said his son might appeal. You should. A lot of admittees will eventually wind up going elsewhere. My D2 is remains a candidate at 9 other schools. She won't hear from them until April 1. Most of the other schools are more "prestigious" than PSU-UP. If she gets financial aid (we won't get any for PSU) that cuts the cost to near equal with PSU-UP, she probably will not go to PSU. I'm sure there are a LOT of other kids admitted who will make a similar decision. What I'm saying is, there may be room for your son after all.

psualum, i'm really sorry to hear that. your son had really great stats. better than mine and i was accepted to summer. did he check the summer box?
i just don't see how if GPA is 2/3rds the decision, he wouldn't get in.
