Deny - Division of General Studies

In-State
Unweighted GPA - 3.4
Weighted GPA - 3.6

I thought it would be good enough for DGS. Should I have gotten in?

Hmm, the ACT score is definitely good enough, but that GPA and rank seems low.

I know several people who were actually accepted into a real major (not general studies) who had ACT scores as low as 25, but they had high GPAs and Class Ranks.

I know someone who got a 21 ACT and got admitted and a 30 ACT who got denied.

this and other reasons is why i have always believed u of i's Office of Admission and Records should be burnt down and built anew. their system is beyond flawed , but apparently thats due to "budget" issues.

well, it also depends on your essay...especially if you directly applied to division of general studies. if you didn't show in your essays that you had some sort of drive or determination to do something, rather than just applying to DGS cause you thought that was the easiest in, then they're not going to take you. they want people who WANT to go college, want to STAY in college, graduate, and generally be successful, not drifters who don't really know what they're doing and college just seems to be the next step cause that's what they were told.

I'm not accusing you of being that kind of person, but if you get denied when you have pretty standard stats...it means you were denied for a reason other than your stats. Every admissions counselor I've ever talked to at UIUC has said the essays tend to be the deciding "in or out" factor.

Wow this is surprising, I also applied for DGS with a 27 act, 3.2 gpa, and rank similar to yours, and I was deferred. I really thought my essays were good though. Surprised to hear you got straight up denied with better scores than me, but who knows the reason.

Like some others, wow. I know some classmates that were accepted with a 21 and 23 ACT scores but in terms of the student body in UIUC they would be considered a minority, maybe that's why? I dunno. Bearsfan, what other schools have you applied to?
