For many years Michigan was ranked #1/#2 for political science and is now in what is probably a tie for somewhere in the top 4 or so. As a personal data point, I applied to graduate school at Michigan (in another discipline) specifically because, as an undergraduate, it seemed that half the assigned political science papers were written by Michigan graduates or professors. You will find that the Institute for Social Research (ISR) – which is huge in social science research (largest such research entity in the country) and the China center are both great complements to political science and offer research opportunities found at only 1 or 2 other schools in the world.

I can’t speak to the landscape for internships, but the ISR and the China center are the parts of the Michigan website which you should consider searching.
