Two students from my D's school have been admitted to the acting program at DePaul. I heard that the yearly cut system for acting students has been revised from previous years. Does anyone know how the current yearly cut works (better or worse?). These students would like to know before accepting/rejecting. Do those of you who have gone through this think that a cut system is a good thing; and what kinds of alternative theatre related studies can a student do if they are cut and want to stay at DePaul?

I am not aware of the change in the cut system at DePaul. Howver, there was a big discussion of the cut system at DePaul this past year on the Musical Theater Forum. You may wish to do a search there about that topic. In the past, DePaul cut HALF the freshmen with an intent to cut that number no matter the talent. There were current DePaul students who contributed to that discussion.

When I auditioned earlier this year they said they accept 50 and only have space for 25 the next year. No exceptions. That's just what I was told at my audition though.

52 down to 26...some students are offered places as Theatre Arts majors.

Do we want to have that conversation again? Probably not ;) Do as Soozievt has suggested and find the discussion. I think the issues have already been well vetted assuming there has not been a major change in policy and it sounds like there has not.

Yet, to the extent that CC serves as a 'consumer information' site, I would like those who are in the know to list programs that have rather aggressive cut systems, say one third or more of the the entering class - excluding those schools that, as a matter of policy, do not officially admit students into the BFA program until the Sophomore year (i.e., Florida, Tulane, etc.). There has been not been such a 'direct' discussion on CC, from what I have seen going back over the drama and MT threads.

Thats not a subject I am afraid of yet the only one I personaly know about is DePaul. Last year there were several Webster students who where released who were hopping mad and claimed that there was monkey business that was not in the brochure. Then there was some happy students and a school rep that everything was cool. So hard to say if anything is going on there or not.

Some members of the MT forum had a similar discussion about the program at University of Arizona. It might be interesting for you to take a few moments and read that thread. As Wally said above, there were posts from kids who had been cut and were scrambling to find somewhere else to go (and who were reportedly perplexed about why, as they claimed to be A students) and others who had been retained and loved the program.

I have read the threads concerning Webster, Arizona, and DePaul. I received a private note suggesting that the Webster issue may have been a non-issue. In narrowing our list for next year, we are eliminating those programs that aggressiely cut without a decent BA Theater fall-back. Of course, these are questions to ask at the interview, but we are trying to narrow our list by half so as to both optimize the probability of acceptance and eliminate the need to transfer. Again; thanks to WallyWorld and NotMamaRose.
