Emerson no longer has a cut policy

As an FYI nugget that I just got confirmation on from an admissions contact.

Emerson no longer has mandatory cut system. Starting with this year's applying class their plan is to enroll 18 first-year students in BFA Acting and 18 first-year students in BFA Musical Theatre. And, starting with that class, they will replace the Junior year Departmental requirement of a 16 student maximum in those programs and the "re-audition" process with a probationary system based on grades, juries, and conduct.

Both of these programs are still intensive, rigorous programs with high expectations but they do not need to reach a 16 student maximum for Junior and Senior year.

I used to live in Boston and am a big fan of Emerson so I wanted to bring this change to the forum’s attention in case any of you were interested.

This is very good news!

Interesting. Their cut system seemed arbitrary at best, and I am glad they are ditching it.

It was only a matter of time. With Depaul getting rid of their cut policy, Emerson stood out among the better schools as the only one left with a cut policy (though Point Park has sort of a reverse cut where everyone starts as BAs and not everyone gets into the BFA) My daughter did not apply there only because of that policy. I am sure it also didn’t help them with kids deciding between multiple schools either.

My D left off her list any schools with cut programs or audition for BFA at the end of freshman or sophomore year. She knew she wanted a BFA and there are plenty to choose from, so that was a deal breaker for her. She felt if she went through this whole process she didn’t want to worry if she would get cut or not get into the BFA program.

Thank goodness!!!
