DePauw Stereotypes

Hi all!

I know that life at DePauw is very frat central. But how are the students in general? Are they intellectual/artsy? Or does intellectual mean having wine instead of beer to them ;)?

Well, depauw is on princeton review’s list of schools with lots of beer, so i am guessing not a whole lot of wine

I heard that the students are very conservative ><

Hi! I’m a current DePauw student and I wanted to help you guys out with some of this. So here is a few answers to the DePauw stereotypes!

PurpleMist: Yes, DePauw is very frat-central. A lot of the students are very smart, and during the weekdays would be more than happy to debate something highly intellectual with you. However, come the weekends, we all need to let off a little steam after the intense rigors of the work week. As for having wine instead of beer - most frats have beer… and not the nice kind either. That being said, frat parties are a great way to relax and hang out with friends after an intense week but if it’s not your scene there are other options that you can do. For instance, I know of a couple people who haven’t even been to a frat this year and mainly spend their weekends hanging out together watching movies.

HomelessMelody: Yes, DePauw has a pretty conservative campus. Overall, the students are fairly moderate conservatives. For example, when the Westboro Baptist Church almost came to campus to protest our production of “The Laramie Project”, DePauw rapidly assembled a well attended “Love Rally” in support of gay rights on a Saturday night. There is also a College Democrats club that is very active on campus, even if it is smaller than the College Republicans.

If you guys have any other questions, feel free to ask or PM me!

okay, so I’m pretty liberal, kind of awkward around preps sometimes.

But DePauw is basically perfect for me aside from the fact that I really don’t know if I’ll fit in with many people. Like what kind of clothes do people usually wear? I know it’s mostly preppy types, but is there any diversity from that, and are people gonna be accepting if I’m not like that?

Apollo,
I can just tell you what we’ve seen when we’ve visited. The students were much more casual than I expected. Mostly sweatshirts and jeans. Now, I’m not sure exactly how you define preppy, but I didn’t see a bunch of popped collars or dressed up girls. They looked just like the kids at my daughter’s public high school. Hope that helps until someone who actually goes to school there answers your post.

Are you a junior in high school?

the guys are generally pretty casually dressed for class, the girls dress a little less casual. it can be very preppy, but i dont mean popped collar preppy (i dont think people really pop it much anymore anyways). dont worry about being liberal. when people say depauw is conservative, but they mean it is more conservative than most colleges so its generally pretty moderate. stop worrying about how people dress, people generally do not really care how one person out of 2000+ dresses. a majority of people realize they are not in high school anymore. there are niches for most groups really, so dont worry about it being conservative. i am a student at depauw and fairly liberal and i really like it here. do not be hesitant about going greek though. remember, with 10 fraternities and 6 sororities many are not the greek stereotype at all.
