Despairing High School Student

Finals week is just around the corner for us, and I'm quite certain my math grade is going to be a C, which I've heard shatters any dreams of going to a UC school. I'm in 2 AP classes that I'm doing well in (both A's) and my other classes are A's (college-prep Spanish 3 and LA 3). I already dropped AP Lang and I don't want to further hurt my chances of getting into a good school by dropping math. If I stock up on extracurriculars (I volunteer at the Discovery Science Center) and join take an additional class, will that help balance the inevitable C?

One “C” will not shatter your UC dreams. My son received in C in Spanish his Sophomore year and just been accepted to UCR with a Chancellors scholarship. If it is in an AP Class versus a regular class, it will not be frowned upon as much. Hang in there and continue to do well in your other classes. If your aspirations were for UCB/UCLA, yes maybe it will be a problem but there are several UC’s that you could still get into. Do not give up.

Aim for 31+/2100+…
