Detailed plan - Want to transfer within 2 years to a UC

Hey guys,

So I started at De Anza during Fall of 2010, meaning this coming quarter (Spring 2011) will be my 3rd quarter. Below is an outline of my units (Yes, I've only counted UC transferable classes).

Completed

1st quarter (Fall 2010) - 16 units
- ANTH 2
- ART 1B
- HIST 3A
- POLI 1

2nd quarter(Winter 2011) - 9 units (dropped a philosophy class)
- EWRT 1A
- HUMI 9

To complete

3rd quarter (Spring 2011) - 18 units
- MATH 114
- PERS 6
- ECON 1
- ASTR 4
- ICS 3C

4th quarter (Fall 2011) - 19 units
- ECON 2
- ESCI 19
- MATH 49 (Foothill)
- ACCT 1A

5th quarter (Winter 2012) - 10 units
- MATH 1A
- EWRT 2

6th quarter (Spring 2012) - 10 units
- MATH 1B
- ESCI 19

7th quarter (Summer 2012) - 5 units
- MATH 1C

So, this puts me at 87 units (90 needed to transfer).

1) I want to transfer to some sort of Business major at either UCI, UCSB, UCLA, UCB, or UCSD. Some majors takes longer than others. I want to spend no longer than 2 years total in community college (if you think this is a bad choice, please feel free to say so).

2) I'm worried as I have most of IGETC done, but have barely gotten started on the major classes.

Any advice?

take 4 classes at max i guess. I had 7 classes (semester) and it killed my gpa. you wanna maximize your gpa and extracurriculars cause thats what matters for the top business schools.

Also, be prepared for the unexpected. As you have noticed already, classes are being cut and reduced while student enrollment is increasing. Come up with a back-up plan for each quarter so that you won’t be panicking when a class you need is not available.

It is more important for you to get good grades than to finish in record speed. If you want to major in business, talk with a counselor and other students (who have successfully transferred via such major) about how to get it done.

Best wishes.

and btw not to put you down but I had a detailed schedule before…

and i ended up changing it every semester because of scheduling issues (class not offered in fall, class is taught by notorious professor)

take a math class over the summer. check assist.org for the majors classes you need.

Thanks everyone. Of course, this is just a tentative schedule. I will likely have to change around a few classes.

Any other advice?

Dude. Take a summer class. You’ll be doing yourself a favor.

Don’t get too hung up on the schedule. I started with a CC schedule. Changed my major, couldn’t get into the right class, schedule conflicts with work, etc. I couldn’t be happier with my progress and the classes that I’ve taken, but it doesn’t bear any resemblance to the plan I painstakingly devised, revised, and eventually scrapped.

I’d take that EWRT 2 class sooner than next winter. Ideally you should be taking it the quarter after you took EWRT 1A, but I wouldn’t take it any later than Fall 2011. If you can take it over the summer, do that. The English classes and math class (for IGETC) are best to have done before you apply or that will be on the update after you apply.

EDIT: Also be prepared that it may take you longer than two years. There is nothing wrong with this. Classes are difficult to get and you might find some course loads to be too much. Different professors have different expectations. It would be better to reduce a unit heavy schedule and take longer to finish than to take a lower grade in one or more of your classes.

Good luck getting all your classes lined up properly. I greatly empathize with that “fun.”
