Detroit

How often do students go to Detroit? How easy is it to do so and is it worth it?

I asked this during orientation and I found out that Detrot isn't exactly a great place to be during the night or even during the day time. It's about 30 mins away from Ann Arbor. I asked my taxi driver about clubs and he said there were like only nine in all of Detrot, I thought he was joking but, he seemed pretty serious about it. For fun, I heard that jumping the border over to Windsor, Canada is a lot more worthwhile and safer. Chicago is a longer drive away but, weekend trips to there wouldn't be bad.

I wouldn't walk around parts of downtown Detroit at night by myself, but it certainly has its attractions. Comerica park (baseball) Ford Field (football) Masonic Temple Theater, Fisher Theater, Hart Plaza, Detroit Science Center, Detroit Institute of Arts, the people mover and even the casinos. All perfectly safe and fun to visit. Outside of Detroit you have Henry Ford village and museum. Jumping the border to Windsor would be neither more fun, nor safer. The only attraction is for those who would like to visit a foreign country.

A lot of fraternities and sororities have formals in windsor (because the drinking age is 19), but not many people just randomly go to Detroit. Mostly everything you need is in Ann Arbor, so it's not that common for people to look for things to do in a big city. There is a huge pistons following (which sucks because I am a HUGE Pacers fan), and alot of people will go to auburn hills for games. I will however be in detroit in october because I am running the detroit marathon (I was originally going to do Chicago, but Detroit is cheaper and closer). Detroit is a trashy city, and it is best to avoid it.

well there's always the auto show there every year!! lol thats a good thing

Boo!

I was just going to mention Detroit has an awesome library, next to the Detroit Institute of Arts when I realized AA has both these things.

Detroit still has that "bombed out" look, but is getting a little better. Comerica isn't that bad (why are the fences like 4 miles away?) and Greektown is real nice. With Windsor's strip clubs and 19 year old age limit though, it will be very tough for Detroit to compete, although new border restrictions could help it out a little bit.

Out of all the cities I've been to, Detroit is definitely one of the lowest on the list. I think the autoshow is overrated. It's soooo crowded (unless you can get in early w/ a press release) and the facilities are atrocious. I guess if there is an event to go to, than it's not a bad place to go but just to hang out and tour the city....forget about it. Instead, take a road trip to Chi-town (4 hrs or less depending on how fast you drive)

You guys could visit Cleveland if you want, all the fun of Chicago, but at half the price and with a fourth of the people! Plus its an hour and and half shorter drive! END COMMERCIAL

ur right, the auto show is overrated...but cmon who can resist seeing the 05' Mercedes Benz SLR McLaren for $250,000!!!! OHHHHH

That's dissapointing. I was looking foward to Detroit. It's funny that you mention Chicago. I visited Northwestern and though I didn't actually go into downtown Chicago I saw many different parts of the town around it due to the fact that I was driving there from University of Illinois and then on to U of M afterwards, and I have to say that Chicago did not look like a very good neighborhood. Maybe it was just the parts I saw as I said that I didn't actually go into downtown.

I guess that's the point. Any large city has bad neighborhoods that you wouldn't want to visit. I guess I'm quite disappointed that UMich students would rather visit clubs than the attractions in Detroit that I mentioned earlier. We go quite often for either sporting events, theater, the museums or Greek town and have never felt unsafe.

Chicago is a beautiful city, and most of the metropolitan area is very, very nice (north side/Michigan avenue), whereas detroit is the armpit of american metropolises. It is the dirtiest and trashiest large city in the country, and anything you would want to see there (except probably the auto show-although Braylon Edwards does have a Bentley) can be found in Ann Arbor. Seeing the Wolverines play is way more exciting than seeing the trash lions play, even if their stadium is state of the art. Michigan basketball sucks, so many people go to auburn hills, which isn't detroit, to see the trashstons I mean pistons, but even there you will witness the trashiest and most unruly fans in all of sports (even before the Artest incident, a battery was thrown at iverson, among other things). Stay in Ann Arbor, but if you must leave, go to Canada or Chicago.

I think for music and clubs, the Detroit suburbs have some options that are appealing.

I agree with Hoedown. Clearly, Detroit is not even close to Chicago, but it has much to offer in almost every way. Detroit has great nightclubs, excellent comedy clubs, amazing concerts, very nice malls, and as far as sports go, nobody will look down on the Pistons and the Redwings. How many cities have two championship level teams? The Pistons won it all in 1988, 1989 and 2004. The Redwings won it all 4 times in 9 years!

Alex I am surprised! You forgot boston and your beloved Tom Brady! I hate the red sox and patriots though (Go yankees and colts!), and the pistons just got lucky (last year beating the Pacers with an injured Jermaine O'Neal and the dysfunctional Lakers and this year beating an injured, artest-less pacers team and a Heat team who lost dwayne wade-but they couldn't stop t-dunc or manu!). Also, no one cares about the nhl. Nascar is more popular thank hockey! hahahahahahaha

Stay out of Detroit, you might get shot.

Yeah man I'm kind of scared about running the detroit marathon...I might get shot/diseases. I want to wear an artest jersey, but i'll settle for blue under armour and yellow running shorts!

If you do wear an artest jersey, I might personally show up with my weapon.

"no one cares about the nhl..."
Are you kidding? Hockey is BIG in Detroit...and the Red Wings are Kings!

As for music, check out the Detroit Symphony Orchestra's outdoor summer concert.
