The 4 dorms for freshmen designated community-style (baths down the hall) are almost $1000 less per year than the suite-style dorms--about the cost for textbooks for a year. For students on a tight budget--just how bad are the 4 community-style dorms? Deviney and Dorman's location looks great, but they are older. Smith is over on the westside which seems removed from things, too the FSU website shows Smith rooms being 11'x11' which is super tiny for two people. I guess what I am getting at is, would one regret selecting Deviney or Dorman after getting in them to save money. A luxury penthouse would be nice, but something clean, dry and air-conditioned with a good location would do. Would Dorman or Deviney do?

I selected those originally. Honestly I changed dorm prefs like 3 times. My suggestion is get a nicer dorm, and as far as textbooks, rent them on a website like half.com or chegg.com It’s soo much cheaper. And you’ll be in a nicer dorm as well! I’m so broke but I chose McCollum, Wildwood, Smith, and I think Dorman. I’m definitely getting my books from chegg.com.

Thanks for book advice. The $1000 savings getting community-style dorm actually means having to borrow less money with student loans.

is it really a good way to get books? how long does it take to get them?

7-10 days. Just try and couple up with another classmate for the time being or well…I don’t know, but I’m not going to pay $100+ for a book I can get for around $30-40!
