Hello, I'm an incoming freshman for the class of 2018. The housing application opens up on thursday at 9 am, and I need to decide where I to stay.

I know there are 4(?) community style dorms, which are cheaper than their suite-style counterpart. I know that they are older, but out of the 4 everyone says that Dorman and Deviney are the nicer ones, however my brother who attends FSU said that there is construction going on in close proximity to Dorman and Deviney, and consequently I would have trouble sleeping. That leaves Kellum and Smith, which I hear are two or the worser dorms at FSU.

I was wondering if the extra $1000 is worth it for a suite-style dorm. My family says that I would be missing out on the social experience that I would get with a community style dorm, but I don't think this matters much.

Also, what dorms are considered freshman dorms? The community style, or the community and suite styles?

You have until May 1 to finalize your top housing choices, so there’s really no rush to finalize your choices.

All of the non-apartment buildings on campus are considered “freshman” dorms, in that you can live there as a first year on-campus resident. The only buildings that freshmen are not allowed to live in are Traditions, Ragans, McCollum, and Rogers.

Yes, there is currently construction going on. FSU has decided to completely demolish Dorman and Deviney, and to rebuild Dorman and Deviney as community-style buildings.

I do not know off the top of my head if the new buildings currently being built are going to be open in time for this coming Fall semester, as I haven’t followed the project all that close lately. I know that at least one of the buildings will be open for the Fall 2015 semester at the latest, if not both of them.

As for whether it’s worth it to live in the suite-style dorms instead of community style, that’s a question you’ll have to answer on your own. Some will say yes, some will say no.

The “social” aspect of community vs suite style is blown way out of proportion. Your social experience in your dorm is what you make of it. Every dorm’s RAs and Hall Government staff put on events throughout the year for you to socialize with the rest of the building. Your social experience is what you make of it.
