What are the main disadvantages of being in DGS rather than in the business school freshman year?
It seems like the only big one is that business students get to register for a few classes earlier

The major disadvantage is getting into the business college after freshman year if your desire is to be in that college. A UIUC student in any college other than business can seek to transfer to the business college once in his entire career at UIUC: at end of freshman year for admission into sophomore year. Grades from both first and second semester are used to determine whether you can transfer. You must have completed certain courses before being allowed to transfer (all of which you can take while in DGS). You need a high GPA to transfer, minimum 3.0 just to apply but most likely at least 3.5 to have any real chance of transfer. And only about 50% of those who seek transfer to the business college are accepted and the college is known to reject some with very high grades because it does a full file review for which essays and ECs are very important.

It is difficult to transfer into the business school as drusba stated

Oh okay I see but as a freshman I wouldn’t be at a great disadvantage in terms of curriculum right?

Bank, you wouldn’t be at a great disadvantage in terms of the classes you’d be able to take, but so what? The point is you want a degree. DGS is not a degree program. They exist to move students into a degree program. The great advantage of UIUC is that you apply directly to a degree program, not to the university in general as in other schools where you compete based on your first year grades and coursework to get into limited spots in your program of choice there. DGS mimics other institutions in that you will need to, at some point, apply to a degree program at UIUC, but, many programs, namely business, engineering, and the hard sciences have limited spaces available having already admitted students to them directly from high school.

Get it?

Yeah I understood that fully. I just want to make sure that I’m not behind in terms of curriculum. Obviously I will try to transfer out after freshman year, but I don’t want to have to catch up if I do.

DGS does not limit you that way. If there were ever some restriction, you work with your DGS advisor on it. When will you be registering?

My registration is June 5th

Ok then, what program within business are you trying to transfer into? Look at the suggested curriculum for that major. Construct a schedule in preparation for your advisor meeting, factoring in any AP credit you might have that provides credit for any gen eds. Talk to him/her about your plans and when you would like to attempt to transfer. Relax.

They will let you take ALL of the classes that a first year business major will take, provided that there is space. Talk to an adviser asap about these classes and you will either be able to register for them right away or they will add you to a waitlist for the class.

As other users have stated - business is EXTREMELY hard to transfer into. Everyone I know that has gotten in has had a ~3.7 minimum. You may say, “No problem, I can get a 4.0 if I try.” PLEASE make sure you take a good, hard look at the dedication you are willing to put into doing this. A 3.7 is by no means an easy thing to do and you will have to make many sacrifices during the year to study while all of your friends, who are already in majors, are doing whatever they want. It is hard work.

It can be done, but you have a long, tough year ahead.

Good luck
