Do many people apply as undeclared in hope to change their major after the first year?
I've heard that it's impossible to transfer from DGS to the school of Business, can anyone confirm this?

I’ve heard it’s very difficult, not impossible, to transfer to business. I have no proof or confirmation, though.

I found this online… thats why i wasn’t sure

"The Division of General Studies (where we have the campus undeclared major) is a great place for students at the freshman and sophomore levels who are exploring educational opportunities. Lower-division students who want to work with excellent advisors who will help them transfer internally to one of the colleges on campus are well served applying to DGS.

Students who know what they want to study should apply to that program.

Note that it is not always that easy to change majors. You should never assume it will be possible, so should only apply to a program you would be happy in through graduation. DGS does a great job moving students into a variety of majors, but the students must have the GPA and requirements to get admitted to their chosen major. (Also note that it is not possible to transfer into the University into DGS and then later transfer into the College of Business.)"

anyone else know?

To me it reads that you can’t externally transfer (from another post secondary institution)into UIUC and DGS and then be able to transfer into the College of Business. I think that if you are initially admitted into DGS and UIUC directly from High School, you do have an opportunity to transfer into Business.

I do agree that it’s quite nebulous.

Everyone who enters as DGS hopes to transfer to another major either after freshman year or after sophomore year since DGS is not a major and is designed to prep you to go into one of the other colleges. It is not easy to transfer into business from DGS simply because business does not take a large number of transfers. However, it is possible but you will need high grades, good essays, and take certain courses while in DGS freshman year that are required to transfer into business to give you any chance.

Business accepts transfers from other UIUC colleges (including DGS) only after freshman year (not before, not later). Business accepts transfers from other universities either after first or second year. If you transfer from another university into any UIUC college other than business, you will not be able to thereafter transfer into business.

Does anyone know how difficult it would be for me to be in DGS next year and then transfer to Media for the year after that? The media college is small and small = selective.
