DHS awards sent late March?

Today in the Tulane Facebook group, someone made a post stating that they had just spoken to an admissions representative who said that while PT Award notifications were being sent out sometime this week, DHS recipients wouldn’t hear back until late March this year. I realize that this is much later than the typical mid-February release of DHS awards in the past, and I was wondering if anyone else had heard about this supposed late March DHS notification date?

@Fergus3. Nope, and D2 was one of the students interviewed from the DHS pool for Stamps.

The Stamps interviewers didn’t have to report back until February 6th, which could explain a small delay in DHS decisions. It wouldn’t explain late March, though.

Waiting until late March to notify students would also run against what has seemed to be Tulane’s strategy in the past. In the past, they’ve made sure that prospective students have plenty of time to look at and enjoy their merit aid offers from Tulane before hearing from the reach schools that don’t notify until late March/very early April. They’ve also traditionally sent out most of the major merit aid decisions before what used to be Honors Weekend and is now Top Scholars Weekend. The first TWS is March 1-2…

@‌fallenchemist ???

News to me. I could see the 5 Stamps winners not being announced until later in the process, but this makes no sense to me.

It’s a Facebook post, so who knows. They may have talked with one of the students that work part time in the admissions office, who may have been conf

@fergus3 Was this on the closed admitted students page that admissions runs? If so, it probably has more credibility. But I understand there’s also a closed informal group, which isn’t run by admissions. If the post appeared there, I’d be more skeptical. Consistent with your sense, @fallenchemist ?

No, it isn’t, but the first year they deviate from historical patterns will be the year my sense is wrong. But I agree that, even besides years of doing it at the same time (3rd week of Feb.) it makes little sense to wait that long to tell the winners and give them so much less time to visit campus, especially losing critical days of their spring break, when many make their college trips.

@Arlmom2‌ yes it was on the closed page run by admissions, but it was posted by a student so credibility is still questionable. I’m hoping that the student was just misinformed or mixed up some dates. Either way, I guess we will just have to wait and find out

@Fergus3‌ I confirmed with admissions today (an officer, not an intern) that they are both coming out in late February. I assume that means the regular time. The only thing that might be different is that the PTA might come before the DHS.

@StagNation‌ wow, that’s relieving to hear! I guess the person who posted in the Facebook was just misinformed or confused. I’m really glad that we don’t have to wait until late March to hear back.

Thanks, @StagNation and @Fergus3 My guess is that the person who was saying late March was talking about Stamps, which could easily come after both PT and DHS.

Jeff from admissions did a blogpost in February 2013 when DHS and PT were going out:

(I can’t find anything like that for 2014)
Perhaps he’ll do that again this year!

@fallenchemist – a couple more questions for you. I thought I remembered seeing somewhere that the DHS and PT committees were working together to avoid the unlikely occurrence of one student being offered both Deans and Paul Tulane. Is that consistent with your understanding? If they are doing that, I assume that the Deans get to choose first, since that program has been around longer, and well, they’re the Deans?

I don’t know about priority if someone gets chosen by both, or if that can even happen. For all I know DHS evaluates their entries first, and the PTA and CSS lists are scrubbed of those names that are selected as winners. But if they are selected concurrently, then either by priority or by consensus a student would get selected for one or the other. The biggest reason I can think of for DHS getting priority, besides being the older award, is that it is also the gateway to the Stamps.

However they do it, I am quite confident they take great care to ensure that a person isn’t accidentally selected for both awards.

Yay! That’s good news. I can’t imagine someone getting a rejection from the Paul Tulane and then having to wait for another month to find out about the DHS (assuming they applied to both). That would be cruel and unusual punishment. So - only another couple of weeks of suspense for my DD - one way or another.

Indeed, @VAmomof4‌. However, it is possible that the PTAs won’t all be announced at once. I think that happened the first year. I seem to recall there were two waves. But let’s wait and see.

Is it the case that most/all DHS winners were interviewed for the Stamps, so that if you weren’t, you pretty much know you’re not getting the DHS?

@hs2015mom‌

No, I am pretty sure that is not the case. I think they might have interviewed the people with the very highest stats that look to be the most likely candidates for the Stamps, but that doesn’t mean that there might not be winners of the DHS that did not get interviewed. It is always hard to know what is going on behind the scenes with these things, especially when there is another organization involved (The Stamps Foundation). I wouldn’t give up hope quite yet.

@fallenchemist‌ - Thanks!

Will be interesting to see how the Stamps and Paul Tulane scholarships affect the release of the DHS. In previous years, the results were out about now.

I think Mardi Gras might have a bigger effect. But yes, normally they would start going out at the end of President’s Day week, so still possible they will go out Thursday or Friday.

Yup. This is being discussed simultaneously in 2 threads. If they didnt go out before the offices closed for Mardi Gras, it will be a few days for sure. And no word on Tulane Jeff’s blog.

Lol. If I never see another pair of gold basketball shoes, it’ll be too soon…

Last year DHS people found out late February so I wouldn’t start looking for the UPS delivery man until next week.
