In CR I often narrow down to 2 possible answers and then choose the wrong ones. Can someone provide the tips how to discern 2nd best from the correct answer? I often find advises to check if the answer is fully substantiated by the text but for me both possible answers seem substantiated. I feel like I don't have the insight for doing well in CR :(

Play Devil’s advocate. Go over both answers and try to figure out why they’re wrong. Then choose the one that’s less wrong.

Also, get rid of anything that’s even sort of extreme.

I agree with Kyrix1. You’ll do a lot better if you figure out why an answer is wrong rather than why an answer is right. I would like to add that it’s important for you to remember that you must leave your personal opinions out. In other words, don’t choose the answer that sounds good to you; you have to go back to the passage and find the proof.
