Did any accepted students get notification of scholarship?

cerps343 you might get a quarter scholarship cause of the SAT score but im not sure. there used to be a chart on their website for what kind of scholarship you receive depending on where you fall. Also I don’t know if this helps anyone but if you are automatically in the honors program (meaning that you got int without applying for the honors program) then you are automatically given some scholarship.

My DS applied at the end of November. He was notified of his acceptance in the second week of December. Last Monday He received a nice letter from Rutgers indicating he was awarded the presidential scholarship, acceptance into the honors program and (very important for Rutgers), guaranteed housing. So, it is true perhaps at least for some. (@ mamajay)

Does everyone who is admitted into the honors program get offered a merit scholarship?

Two years ago, my daughter with over 4.0 GPA at a private school was not offered anything after she was admitted. As it turned out it was because her school didn’t rank, and Rutgers just automatically disqualified her(their computer program did). Her counselor had to fax a letter to give an approximate ranking, she was then offered honors and merit money.

I still haven’t gotten notification of acceptance yet. Do they accept in descending order of grades/ranking/sat score???!?! An acquaintance with worse GPA, ranking, and SAT score got accepted already, but mine is still in process. I also applied a day earlier than she. I don’t understand.

summershadow, I believe it also depends on what major/school you’ve applied to. Certain ones like business, pharmacy, are more competitive than others, and take longer to hear back from.

Was wondering if anyone came across this situation. Son just received a letter from Rutgers awarding him the Presidential Scholarship for SAS and Engineering. But for the Business school (which is of course his first choice) it says “No Scholarship awarded”.

Doesn’t this seem strange? I mean even if the Business School has different criteria, shouldn’t he be getting some type of award from them? To go from 23K per year to nothing depending on the program seems strange to me.

mamajay…
my son was accepted to the Business School. When we went to the information session before he applied, the advisor told the group that the two most difficult scholls to get accepted into were the Business and Pharmacy programs. She said they had criteria that were higher than SAS and the others. I can only assume that this also applies to scholarship. My son has not received any money from Rutgers, although he got merit money from another college.

I didn’t think the Business school was so selective - I hear that engineering is harder to get into than Business.

At any rate, I got a Presidential Scholarship today to Engineering and SAS but not Business. I was accepted back in November, though.

Jr.

My son got the same letter yesterday and it absolutely makes no sense. Why offer a free ride to SAS and Engineering but nothing to Business? It’s not like they’re the Wharton School. I know Business is more selective than SAS but also thought Engineering would be very selective.

The only thing I can think of is Business is not offering any Presidential Scholarships and that’s what this letter was referring too. Maybe they’ll be another letter addressing a Business school scholarship (which might be less money). In any case I will try to call tomorrow to get some clarification and post if I find anything out.

Mamajay,

The Business school does offer the Presidents Scholarship, i got the letter yesterday. I don’t know what criteria they had though, or why you’d get money from two other schools, but not business. Seems odd.

Another question on the Presidents Scholarship, it says that the money cannot transfer with you if you change schools. If i got offered money for both SAS and business, went into business then changed to SAS, would i get the money since i had initially been offered scholarships to both? Or would transfering mean I would just no longer receive money?

what was your status ? score, gpa, essay wise.

White Male
SAT: 2280 (720R,780M,780V)
SATII: 750 BioE, 800 Math 2
GPA: 94UW, 97ish W
Rank: My school doesnt normally release rank but does if a school requires it. Id guess top 5% out of 300.
Essay: was incredibly generic, but decent enough i guess…
Solid ECs and recs and what have you.

Hubert,

I think if they offered you the scholarship to both schools you’ll be okay if you transfer programs later on.

This just seems like such a weird way to give out scholarships (by program) since a lot of students don’t know what they want to major in at this point.

Big congrats to those who were awarded a Presidential so far! But I remain confused—Rutgers made this huge deal this year of removing the previous requirements for Presidential, which had been top 5% and over 1500 on SAT (CR, M). They said they were judging ‘holistically.’ Yet every single award winner so far who has posted, has the same rigidly defined scores of above. So what then does ‘holistic’ mean? To be cynical: Is this "holistic’ thing merely a way of covering their butts in case they get handed a discrimination lawsuit?

I think Rutgers doesn’t want to be obligated to give based on a table of scores anymore, since they didn’t know who the NJ governor would be and what their new budget/s would look like. With the current economy, many more students are accepting the full rides from Rutgers than ever before and it must be a huge strain on the school and alumni donation funds.

Also, perhaps they take more into account extra-curriculars and the essay (especially if scores aren’t exceptionally high to warrant an immediate full ride), but it may be idealistic of me to suggest that.

Koto,
Good point–I bet that’s it. Thanks for your thoughts–

I spoke to someone from Admissions that confirmed that each school has a certain pot of money to give out and awards merit accordingly. She also said that No scholarship awarded means there will not be any scholarship (not even partial ) forthcoming.

So my son has a choice of the Presidential Scholarship for SAS or nothing for Business. He was also offered the Presidential for Engineering but is not interested in that.

What she couldn’t answer though (because they don’t have anything in writing) is what would happen to the money if he started out in SAS and decided to transfer to Business later on.

I heard scholarships for Pharmacy and Business were being reserved for only the top applicants to each of those schools (whereas in prior years many of those applicants qualified), and that “holistic” means they can award to kids with lower stats who have other exceptional accomplishments. Net result is that there will be fewer scholarship offers.

“Holistic” means they can do what they want and we can’t question it.
