Did anybody do Iowa SSTP?

hi. zainykhas,
I am one of the accepted and I have decided that I will be going to Iowa this summer.
This program usually accept around 15-25 people each year, so it's fairly selective, but I wish you luck and hope to see you this summer!
I got the offer for pathology lab, but on my application, I put biology, envrionmental science, archaeology, geology, and some more that I can't remember. For the subject option that 's not included in the list, I put economics. But I'm pretty happy with the offer for pathology lab, because it's much more personal for me than any of other subject topics.
I applied to a bunch of other summer programs, about 10 or 11 to increase my chances of getting into one program. So far, I've been accepted into Iowa, and there's only few I hadn't heard from back yet, but I think Iowa would give me something more in the long run than all of other summer programs.

Cranland, maybe u should try to email Mr. Swain again or call him. It's possible your email got into his spam inbox.

So, I wish both of you luck and that you end up where you want to go!

Did you email him on william-swain@uiowa.edu. Try emailing again. May be the mail just got bogged down on the yahoo/hotmail/gmail server. It has happened numerous times to me. Also make sure that you include your name and date of birth in the email to help him identify you.

I've also applied for volunteer work. One is at a local hospital and one is at a school where I will be required to teach poor and disadvantaged children.

So what do you think will look better on college application. Summer Research or Summer Volunteering.

it's good to have back up plans........
idk about looking better on college apps.....though i would prefer to do summer research first, then do volunteering in fall...which i plan to do.

Thanks for the idea for fall. But will you manage it? After all there is still the SAT II and the college essays.
And the transcripts count more than anything else. So make sure that you don't lose out on that.
Have you taken SAT 1. Mine is on 3rd may

ur welcome. I will manage it. I've already took SAT 1 in jan, and score's high enough for me to go to HYP, etc.
I'm going to take US History SAT 2, and maybe 2 other SAT 2 this june, and one SAT 2 in fall.
I'm going to recycle my essays for numerous summer program i've applied to for college essays.
Yeah, transcripts count, though my senior year sched is a little easier than this year, even I'm taking more APs than this year. but don't worry, i'll manage it.

how's it's going with SSTP stuff? anything from Mr. Swain yet?

he thanks for the reference to this link^^

and to all those still waiting with no response whatsoever, Im right there with you

is swain still deciding on admissions on a rolling basis, or should i just give up hope and move on to something else?

Hey wildchartermage, thanks for the reply. Actually i don't think that I will do good in SAT, maybe around 2000, so am keeping my scheduel light to allow for the SAT retest. Will take SAT II maths, physics, and chemistry maybe in october ( If I get above 2100 in SAT 1) or in Dec ( If I get below 2100 in SAT this time ). Nothing from SSTP yet. The wait is really killing me.

Hey Dabulls, he said that he has already rejected many people who did not look promising so if we have not still been rejected, there is a good chance that we will get in.
To quote Mr. Swain

"You would think the decision would have been made by now but this year things are moving slowly…

I have placed 15 students in labs so far and I’d like to place at least 10 more… I’m waiting on faculty mentors’ decisions, I’m waiting on decisions from students to whom I have made offers, I’m waiting for people to return calls and emails, etc… The bottom line is that you are still in the running. Your application looks excellent… I’m still trying to place you. Hopefully I’ll wrap this stuff all up next week.

-Will Swain "

So that means that we are a bit confirm applicants. just wait for official confirmation.

ooo...zaniykhas...and dabulls.
well, u don't have to worry about me or the other boy i know b/c we've been admitted and we both accepted the offer. I'm doing speech pathology and this boy is doing electro-chemistry.

what are your areas of interests? just wondering..

it sounds like this program is quite competitive b/c he said so many ppl has been rejected, but i wish both of you luck again! If you have been accepted, you'll most likely get an email from him instead of though mail. so check ur email often.

oh, r u both planning to enter science fair competitions if both of you got into SSTP? I might, but i'm not too sure what i'll be researching on.

hey wildchartermage, I mentioned physics and then as a second option mentioned chemistry. But my essay was solely focused on physics ( electrical and waves ) so I think that I will get acceptance in physics lab.

So what science fair / competition you have in mind. Intel Fair????? or First Robotics?????

By the way, which university you people are aiming. MIT, Caltech and the likes. Or some other not-so-prestigious university.

I Got Rejected.
According To The Email, My Application Was Very Competitive But There Were Not Enough Places And So I Could Not Be Accepted.

So Now, I'll Have To Look Somewhere Else.

awwww!!!!! danggit, zainykhas!!! I'm sorry!
It sounds like you were very speicalized and focused in your areas of interests, which may cause the rejection.
To increase my chances of getting in, I broadened my areas of interests by checking six areas of interests, not two. So i guess that enabled me to work in any six of area of interests. Aagain, I'm sorry!!! I hope you get into somewhere else!

To answer your questions, yeah, I guess I might do something like Intel and Siemens, and I"m planning to apply to HYP, MIT, Caltech, and schools like that.

rejected too. i got an email this morning that said we were the top tier of students who he rejected, but rejected is rejected.

awww.dang! i'm sorry too...i guess there's no one else on CC who got into this program besides me and this boy i know...

So i think that I should do the volunteering. After all, caring and serving the disadvantaged is not too bad a thing.

good idea.

im going to sstp iowa this summer for evolutionary bio
i've talked to people who went
they liked it

hey! we should chat over IM! do u have a facebook account? I know another boy from NJ who's going too. where do u live? i live in CT.
I'm doing speech pathology and yeah, i've talked to ppl about it too and she said she really liked it.

my IM is sarastar535
i have a facebook too
NYC, brooklyn to be exact
my guidance counselor did speech pathology at sstp

hey, added u, but u weren't on at that time. Looks like we're pretty close to each other, since i live on coastal CT (but much closer to RI).
and ur guidance counselor must be pretty young to participate in SSTP. leeme guess, he or she must be somewhere between 20-50 years old, right?
just wondering, since I'm doing speech pathology too, could u ask him/her who was his/her mentor and what research topic he/she did? thanks.
