Amazing! What are the odds of the exact same letter being written exactly alike by two different people a year apart? A Brazilian to one, I'd bet. I know I have the National Enquirer's number here somewhere. Oh. Here it is-turned to the story about the boy who was so hungry he ate his own head.

Just kidding, folks. It is interesting to see all the little tricks and devices they use on us, though, isn't it?

I don't think my daughter has heard boo from Davidson since her application was complete (she did get something saying that it was complete). I don't believe she got a letter like above or a user name/password. She is a very unlikely admit...so perhaps that is why. She LOVED the school but her SAT scores are near the 25%ile in math and just a tad below that in CR. Class rank is top 5% with a strong GPA and agressive courseload...but...the applicant pool at Davidson is a strong one. I suspect the only ones with her stats who get accepted are recruited athletes...and even most of THEM probably have higher stats. But you never know...and it was one of her favorite schools!! She would love to play the oboe/English Horn in their orchestra!!

thumper1, all applicants get a user password, because whether you are admitted, denied, or waitlisted you can check your decision online. If an applicant has not received that information it might be a good idea to get in touch with admissions. As I recall, though, user/password info comes early in the process in a letter acknowledging receipt of application, so it may have been received but overlooked. I'd suggest your D call and ask, after checking her own files to be sure she really has not gotten it. And good luck to her.

DD said "oh...you mean that PIN for my application? Oh yes, I needed that to complete part 2." Too funny. Now she knows she can check the status of her application (which she knows is complete because she got a postcard or an email telling her so). She loved the school, but it's a HUGE long shot...unless maybe this year the only oboe player is graduating and no others are applying...

My son sent his application by Dec. 1 and hasn't received such a letter. I doubt receipt correlates with applicant quality, though, because he has top 1% SAT scores, lots of AP's and good gpa, is an All-State musician and varsity athlete (including captain) in two sports. This school is one of his two favorites, so I hope he is not out of the running for some reason.

Iggal, my daughter didn't receive "the letter" either. She also submitted her application on December 1. She loves Davidson, but knows it is a huge reach for her. Like your S, she is an All State musician (principal last year as a junior on oboe). She is a varsity athlete, but not a competitive one. Her stats are ho hum for Davidson, however.

I was accepted without ever getting such a letter, don't worry.
Actually, all of you should be happy, the number of appplications is down this year according to an article in the Davidsonian, after ED1, admissions still expects to accept about 950 more applicants in order to fill about 300 more spots. The gist of the article is that Admissions has tailored its recruiting proccess to those more likely to come rather then just seeking applicants. In my humble opinion though, you choose the right year to apply (what admissions office doesn't play the numbers game, comeon).

Even though I've been through this twice before with older children, these college admissions decisions are still a mystery to me. I thought my son had a good chance for Davidson, because he lives so far away, and less chance of getting into the other of his two main choices, similarly ranked but in-state. Yet yesterday, he received a letter from his other choice saying he was a finalist in their merit scholarship competition and offering to fly him to an all-expenses-paid weekend at the college to interview! I assume that means they are likely to accept him. I can finally stop worrying - hope the worry habit is not too entrenched!

I recieved a letter from a specific department. Anyone else get something? I suspect, though, that I got it because this dept. is small (6 teachers when they have about 8 seniors a year with this major) and they are attemping to ensure that students are familiar with their dept. Davidson has given me more mail than anyother college that I'm still considering. It seems that their large advertizing scheme is generated towards picking some of those students up that they loose to schools like Williams, Swarthmore, and Pomona.

I recieved a letter from a specific department (psychology) as well as the general letter referenced by the original poster. I'm guessing that the departments were given the names of applicants who are considering majors in their area, and were allowed to send letters to those people in hopes of selling Davidson. I think the general letter was just that - a letter. It's pretty generic and likely letters seem to be more overt.
