I got this email from the Davidson chair of the economics dept. a few weeks ago, and was wondering if anyone got something similar? Any ideas what this means? I applied RD with an intended major of econ. if it matters. I'm kind of just assuming this is something they send to everyone with similar intended majors as a kind of form letter not to get my hopes up

Dear sprucemoose,

My name is Fred Smith, and I am the chair of the economics department at Davidson College. Our admissions office let me know about your interest in Davidson, and they also told me that you've (potentially) got an interest in studying economics. I'd be delighted to answer any questions that you might have about economics at Davidson – or about the school in general – so please contact me at your convenience. You'll find my office phone number listed below, but you can also contact me on my cell phone at xxx-xxx-xxxx.

In the meantime, let me highlight some of the things that I've come to love about Davidson and about our department in my twelve years here. First, let me assure you that the honor code is really everything that it is cracked up to be. I give all of my quizzes and exams as timed, take home exercises. I trust my students completely, and it gives me more time for class discussions and student questions during and after my lectures. Next, I think you'll find that our department does a remarkable job of offering a wide range of economics electives. We have course offerings in everything from corporate finance to urban economics to health economics. This leaves our students well prepared for graduate or professional school, or for the working world in Charlotte or beyond. We routinely send students to top law schools, to medical school, or to graduate school, but our graduates also take jobs at employers like Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and Bain. And, we have students that pursue other opportunities, too – Teach for America, the Peace Corp, and work in the non-profit sector. Finally, I think you'll find that Davidson's small size coupled with a focus on community makes the atmosphere truly unique.

I hope that you'll be able to visit campus if you haven't done so already. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

Have a great spring semester!

Sincerely,
Fred

I didn’t but i applied as an econ major and got an email today saying I am a presidential scholar! That email must mean something though, seems legit.

^^^^^^muffinmiruku and spruce moose,

Congratulations muffin on earning the Presidential scholarship! That is a tremendous honor and I’m proud of you and I don’t even know you!

Spruce moose, I think that email speaks some weight into the fact that admissions is interested in you. They passed along your information to the Econ Dept and the guy is trying to stand up for you! If I were you, I’d call that guy on Monday. It looks like he is trying to sell you on that Dept and Davidson, and it’s a smart move on their part because ultimately, education is a business. I bet you 20 bucks that, after your call on Monday, he writes admissions on your behalf. When he does that, that has to carry a significant amount of weight in the admissions process!! How many students do you think have a professor write admissions? Few indeed. I think the stars are linin’ up for ya dude!

The kitesurfer.

I got the same email from the physics chair!!

I hope it’s a good sign! Did you contact them at all?

He asked me to meet with him…sooo I did. Good sign?

I’m guessing it is. what did he say when you guys met?

I got an email back in January. It wasn’t from a department chair though. It was from one of the multicultural admissions directors. Within the email was a letter from a current student who has an Asian background who talked about why she chose Davidson, her Davidson experience, and to strongly encourage Davidson College. Don’t want to keep my hopes up too high though, just in case.

Only 21 more days till we find out! Could time go any slower?

^^^^^^filipina,

I know what you mean with the time moving slowly! I didn’t get any emails from anybody there so that may not be a good sign for me, but I wanted to wish you and the others great luck and I hope you guys make it!

The kitesurfer.

Hi,
I received an email saying I was a semi-finalist for the William Holt Terry Scholarship at Davidson. I was wondering if this means I was admitted? If anyone knows that’d be great!
Thanks.

I feel like I’ve gotten my hopes up, but why would they have sent these emails so late in the game if we were rejected? Why waste their time?

youre probably in.

Im so anxious, the 27th cant come sooner.

Does anyone know if Davidson is usually harder or easier to get into for northerners?

what are your stats?

I’ll share after decisions come out, I dont mean to turn this into a “chance me” but im just curious, do they try to reach out and get more New England kids, or do they try to keep it to more southern kids, or does it just not matter at all

WilliamAndMary

I completely understand what you mean. The first time I received my email I didn’t really think about it much until I took a second look at it. I asked the same question. It looks like all my questions will be answered in one week though!

I’m from South Carolina, and they told me that I had no advantage or disadvantage being from a place so near the school. They do have more Southerners at Davidson, but that’s only because more Southerners apply. So to answer your question, the number of applicants differs from region to region, but the admit rate pretty much stays the same.

thanks! (apparently “thanks!” is too short of a message)

No problem! I’m geeking out from all the waiting! I applied ED1 and got deferred, so hopefully they’ll see something this time around, and my 1st semester of senior year was my best ever, so fingers crossed.

We’re all in the same boat!

the kitesurfer.

I can’t wait anymore! I just got into UNC-Chapel Hill and Wake Forest, soo I’m wondering if this says anything about my chances?
