My friend was deferred but her letter specifically said why they deferred her (it said that although her scores are weak, her essay was powerful and thus she is in the most “active” consideration pool among ED deferrals)
did anyone get letters like this??

A lot of accepted ED applicants got personalized letters.
I haven’t yet…
But a lot have, lol.

Brown’s physical acceptance letters tend to be (are always?) personalized. I didn’t know deferred ED letters were, but it doesn’t seem like too much of a stretch…

I actually didn’t get a personalized ED acceptance letter. Seems like it’s luck of the draw!

Sorry, I meant RD Acceptance. I do know ED is different in how they handle you, since you’re already committed and there’s no reason to woo you (no ADOCH for instance). I don’t have enough evidence to say for sure, though.

what scores did your friend get?

I was deferred and I didn’t get a letter like that. (Though I would have loved one… my guidance counselor said they cited weak scores, but I’m pretty sure it was my demographics.)

It’d be nice to know where we stand in the deferral pool.

Yes, I am curious too. What were you’re friends scores? Sub 2000? Or higher? It would be nice to know what Brown considers “weak scores.”

All those data sets are inaccurate to me because they include athletes, legacies, etc.

truzzi182- They said that I had weak scores. My SAT was 2200.

Did they tell your guidance counselor why you got deferred?

I haven’t heard anything at all…

my friend’s SAT score was around 2000

gogogogo, are you certain they sent her a letter that personalized?

My guidance counselor had to call them and try to talk to our local rep. They ended up giving a reason, but it wasn’t too helpful.

Deferral is like unrequited love.

“truzzi182- They said that I had weak scores. My SAT was 2200.”

That seems a bit harsh… according to collegeboard that’s directly within the mid 50%. Are they saying that their school’s average standardized test scores are essentially weak?

If they are citing weak scores, 2200 doesn’t help decipher what that means.

How did the scores break down?

730/730/740? can’t see weakness there…

790/800/610? hmmmm…

780/780/640? maybe?

or mix up the numbers in different ways…was there one number that hung in a different bracket than the others?

:Owhat… if 2200 is weak, then I’m done. That is my score. My section scores were all in the 700s range. OH NO… 2200 = fail? D:

areisenb, are you implying that you’re asian lol? i’m pretty sure 2200 is above the median sat for the school as a whole, but maybe not for asians.

i wish cornell gave personalized letters cornell isn’t very into recruiting students from what i can see. oh well. if i had applied to brown though, i probably would have been rejected with my weak 2260 (=]) and lack of ECs. and i love cornell’s campus and environment. but i wouldn’t mind going to brown. go brown!

I have a 2160 so I guess I’m a weak applicant now. Honestly, if I get denied it won’t be because of my SAT so its no use worrying about it. I’m still very surprised they said a 2200 was weak when its like 10 points above the universities average score. I wonder if one of you sections was very bad.

A 2200 was a weak score within the context of this specific student’s circumstances. Maybe his score was the “highlight” of his application and he has nothing else to make up for it, so it was called “weak”.

^makes sense. Thanks! now I’m not so worried about my 2200 anymore haha

"areisenb, are you implying that you’re asian lol? i’m pretty sure 2200 is above the median sat for the school as a whole, but maybe not for asians. "

I’m not Asian; I’m female Caucasian from NY.

My breakdown was CR: 710, M:740, W:750.
GPA was 97.5 (my school doesn’t calculate GPA normally; they only calculate it for colleges)

“A 2200 was a weak score within the context of this specific student’s circumstances. Maybe his score was the “highlight” of his application and he has nothing else to make up for it, so it was called “weak”.”

It’s hard to evaluate my own subjectives, but I don’t think my scores were my “highlight.” In my opinion, my writing was the part of my application that I felt was strongest.

I do not think that my scores make me a “weak” candidate. I’m confirmed in myself as an applicant and realize that it was most likely my demographics (NY Caucasian girl- not too rare) and not my scores that caused my deferral.

For people who were deferred: how are you guys feeling about being put with RD applicant pool? I read deferral as rejection…
