i'm from nj and i got into rice, but i got no scholarships =( i was wondering if the school bases its merit scholarship offers on SAT score, geography, or maybe a mixture of different things...

cisforcons

I'm confused on the merit money issue. I thought the trustee was worth 8,000 and the century 4,000. Also, have you done alot of research to qualify for the century?

Simba, I'll gladly have my icecream and wouldn't be surprised if Bandit_TX had some celebration ice cream as well.

For others - I've done aboslutley no research to qualify for the Century scholarship.

I think Rice might be looking for new Humanities majors to conduct research since I read somewhere (on this board?) the departments have good teachers but lack the amount of research needed for national stature. Thus perhaps they are attempting to use Century Scholarships to get new research accomplished.

I'm somewhat confused about these scholarships.
1.) Previously, it was posted that opportunities to obtain scholarships were numerous. But, did you have to be A GENIUS and had to have out of this world stats? The way I figured nearly all of Rice applicants are ultra competive, so to get scholarships you would have to be a genius.

2.) Like Kdos, I thought most of these scholarships were either 8,000 dollars or 4,000 dollars. How was that some people were being awarded 30,000 dollars plus in scholarships?

kdos and private joker -
it used to be that trustee's was worth 8,000/ year for 4 years (total 32,000) and century scholars was worth 3,000/year for 2 years (total 6,000)
It seems that rice has increased these amounts to either 9,000 or 12,000/ year for 4 years (totalling 36,000 or 48,000) for trustee's, and to 6,000/ year for 2 years (total 12,000) for century scholars.
Thus it appears that the largest awards (other than the very few full tuition engineering scholarships) would total $60,000 over 4 years.

But how numerous are these awards and how competitive is it to get one?

They are cpmpetitive, but academics is not the only thing. They are given out to candidates who meet their recruitmemt goals in geography, ethnicity, gender, yield management and strengthning of student body in certain deparments.

i got the trustee scholarship, applied ID and i am definetely not a "genius" in terms of reserach and sat scores. my essays were good (i like to think so anyway) and though im not a recruited athlete, my athletic accomplishments were pretty impressive. i had a ton of ec's and comm service. and im a URM female, but if i hear a "oh, that explains it," ill kill you...jp but anyway, the weakest part of my app was my sat. but i mad up for it with the ap scores and classes and my gpa.

my point is you dont have to be a genius or have a 1450+ sat score either to get a scholarship.

Yea I noticed on the website the amounts for the trustee/century scholarships but it seems they raised their offers.
I haven't been involved in research projects in high school.

i got into rice ID and i didn't get any merit money. It's kinda disappointing since I thought being an intel semi would've helped. =
