The over all cost is $53,000 a year but the max they give anyone is 29,000?? thats outrageous! i mean i love the school but seriously! thats a lot in loanss!! Dont you agree? or am the only one? is everyone having to take a 20,000 + loan per year or did u get a lot more in aid or do you have a lot of outside scholarships? how is everyone paying for this?? do you have topay this much or is it just me??

When I was accepted at BU, I was given over $51,000 in aid. Almost full ride. I still had to pay a few thousand dollars per year, however.

And I had no loans, by the way.

What was your financial situation that allowed for the full ride? Congrats on not having to pay much!

It really just depends on your family’s financial situation and your EFC. If they gave someone 29,000 that means that their EFC is about 20,000 and financially your family is stable enough to pay that much.

I received around 18,000 in aid and stuff, but that’s because my EFC was a little higher. I know someone who received almost a full-ride because she was a pretty good student AND her need was greater.

Well:

I was a Boston Public Schools student.

My counselor vouched for me.

My need was really high.

My grades were decent.

But, then I got the Allston-Brighton Scholarship at Boston College, so I decided to go there instead… But I was really close to going to BU, however.

well i am an out of state student and all of the in state schools were giving me almost a full ride. my EFC is 0!!! which is why paying this 20,000 is back breaking in some ways!

What does being out of state have to do with BU. It’s a PRIVATE school…doesn’t matter what state you are from.

BU does not guarantee to meet full need for its admitted students.

well if you are an instate student you recieve grants and scholarships from the state, regardless of whether you attend a private or public institution, which makes attending a school like BU much easier for in state students. And as far as BU not guaranteeing to meet full need, well i am not even expecting anyone to meet full need i just dont want to be 100,000 in debt at the end of undergrad, i mean i think thats not too much to ask, but thats just me, its not like im paying for Harvard its just BU!

Well, BU gives more than 29k in Financial Aid. They have a Matrix that is based on Need and Merit Aid and this is just for Grants and Loans

[Boston University - Office of Financial Assistance - Applying for Financial Aid](http://www.bu.edu/finaid/apply/incoming_probability.html)

I ended up choosing BU because of the very nice Financial Aid Package I received.

My total Package was $49,500
and $42,000 of it was grants and $2,000 in work study and then last $5,500 were in loans.

The reasons I assume i received this package:
- I handed in my financial information in about a month late, I was lucky enough to even get these funds. As this year BU had supposedly ran out of money for Fin Aid from what others have told me.
- On the Matrix I’m on the Top Tier, 2nd Need Bracket. Also the income is earned just from my mother. I guess they were being nice with my father gone. As you know even if your parents are divorced the other parent still must give in financial info. Couldn’t give mine in so yeah
- As much as I hate to say this, but I think it also helped that I was a Minority majoring in Engineering. The rate of Hispanics going to college is still lower than it should be, and even lower for Hispanics going into a Science/Math related Career
- Plus it helped that, I had lots of EC’s many including Science Related EC’s such as research and Science Research.
- And it helped that not only was I Hispanic, but 3 other underrepresented minorities in Colleges…
- And the fact our Condo is worth nothing, since now I’m reading they also include the value of your house as part of the Financial Aid info and what not.
7.And also they give a VERY high Financial Aid Package to students they try to get to their schools. There are some kids worse off than you, BU gave them nothing or very little like 10k and they have to fork up 40k a year to attend

But anyways you should be happy you recieved that much in Financial Aid, I know some people who received nothing and said that BU said they had ran out of money… so it kinda sucks for them. And I know it’s late but if you have a better financial aid offer I would go with it. That’s what I did, I was about to go to NYU and pay 30k a year >< ugh I would have killed myself after I graduated with a 120k in debt lolz ><.

yeah i was going to accept loyola in md because i would have ended up with no debt but i live in maryland and i need a changeof atmostphere and boston is great! so im excited to be in boston and i will just take the debt in stride. i had no idea that they take into consideration the prices of your house which is probably why i didnt get as much. also i am indian which is an OVER represented minority in one of the typical indian majors, biology. so i can understand but i refuse to feel " gratefull" because i mean i worked my ass of in high school and i deserved this if not better!

I hope you know, your Aid can always change depending on your academics. You can always get more based on your performance the first year ^_^. And Also there are always scholarships to apply to. That’s what i’m going to do to cover the last 5k and the % increase of tuition for the next 3 years!!

I have a friend, her family total income is only like 80k, however she has a house that’s worth about 1.2 Million? But given the fact we are in New York of course prices are like $$$ xD… and plus her Grandparents just remodeled the house, and share a bank account with the parents, so all that money the grandparents had, was shown in her FAFSA and she basically got screwed… =(

I’m from NY, received a package of 51,000. 2000 Work Study and 4000 Loan.

I don’t think your aid changes much based on academics. I think your academics mostly affects your eligibility for aid.

You have a high chance of getting over 30K if you’ve done extremely well in school (valedictorian + EC) or a URM.

With loans included (and even probably a little more without), I got more than $30,000… and I’m not in the top 5 or really low income. I do a fair share of ECs with leadership, and was 11th in my class. I have need, with an increased need recently. BU pretty much matched up with my FAFSA with the loans. So, it’s definitely possible. I’ve heard of a lot of great finaid passages though, so don’t be discouraged if you’re prospective. It’s cheaper than UMASS Amherst for me now…

You have a high chance of getting more of the aid that you need if you did well in HS, but I think that once you’re at BU, your academics don’t impact your financial aid that much other than eligibility for it.

I got around $34,000 I think in scholarship money from BU and then I got some loans. Then I got around $2,000 in a Work-study. I did very well in high school I guess. I was in the top ten of the class, but I don’t know how much that mattered. I did okay my Freshman year in college. I met the requirements to continue my aid.

What were your SAT scores and GPA?
