did bad at university, good at community college: what are my opportunities?

I live in NJ, and went to a state university right out of high school to study engineering. I didn't have a good time in college. I completed about 46 credits, with a gpa of 2.3, a bunch of W's (about 8), and dropped out in my third semester. The engineering school put me on academic probation right before I dropped out.

I went to my local community college and started from scratch. I will complete an engineering AS with about 70-80 credits and a gpa of 3.9. I got into Phi Theta Kappa honor society and am involved in math club.

So, I will have a total of about 116 – 126 credits, many of which are classes that I REPEATED at cc, after taking them at university.

Sooo, I CAN automatically go to NJIT (New Jersey Institute of Technology) because there is an admissions agreement with my cc. So that is my safety.

Buttt, what, considering my background, is the BEST school I could get into? I would like to shop around in NJ and maybe out of state for better schools.

Also, how much will my complicated record affect me?

Or: What schools do I have a shot at?

Have you met the admission requirements for other schools? How many of your credits will transfer? The advantage of an articulation agreement is that you don’t need to worry about these issues.

Do you need financial aid? That can be a problem for transfers.

I wouldn’t expect a selective school to take your grades at face value. Whether or not they require them, they might appreciate seeing standardized tests as a way to assess your actual knowledge.

From what I understand, SATs or ACTs do not really affect the admissions of transfer students who have at least two year’s worth of credits. They aren’t even required.

I just want people’s opinions on what the best schools I can attend are. “Good” doesn’t necessarily mean selective, as many who read things like US News know.

The engineering school I attended is ranked about 48th in the US, but I wouldn’t recommend it for undergraduates. They get their ranking from their grad school and other stuff.
