I was recently accepted to UF and I am thrilled! However, my acceptance letter does not state if I was accepted into my major (business) and just says “Congratulations! You have been admitted to the University of Florida freshman class for the 2015 Fall semester. Your official notification and additional materials will be mailed to you in the next few days. On behalf of the Office of Admissions and the University of Florida community, welcome to the Gator Nation!”
Should I expect the official notification to inform me if i was accepted into the business school? Or, if it is not stated on the UF website does that mean I was not accepted into the business school?
At UF, as a freshman, you apply and are accepted to the University and not your college. However, as HectorSalamanca said, as a freshman, you can pick and choose any college and major. In fact, UF want’s you to explore different majors and expects that over 1/2 of the students will switch majors before they are juniors.
A few majors are limited access and you can’t apply to them until you’re a junior (Biomedical Engineering, for example). However, that’s not the case in the Business college.
The limited access majors are extremely competitive…ALWAYS have a back up plan!!! Also don’t always believe what the advisors tell you…you must go out and speak to different advisors and professors to get the full story sometimes. Also you will find that the limited access majors must accept community college students coming into UF…displacing a UF students spot.
@hapyhapy Thank you for the advise! I understand that I will need to talk to advisers and professors to get the whole story. That makes sense. However, I thought the business school (finance specifically) was not a limited access major according to what @Gator88NE previously said. Even if it is not a limited access major is it still competitive to secure a seat in the business school?
Finance is not a limited access program. You do have to met all the tracking requirements for that major, but if you do then you’ll be able to pick the major.
This is different for transfer students, who have a much harder time getting into any business prorgam other than BABA (Business Administration general studies, BA).
EDIT. With that being said, finance (and accounting) is a demanding major and it’s not uncommon for folks to switch out of finance and into, say management, as an example.
Are you sure finance is not limited access? I spoke with the advisor for transfers for the business school and she informed me that all business school majors are limited
^^^Yes, as I said, it’s different for transfer students. In general they are only allowed into BABA, all other majors are treated as limited access. I think a year or two ago UF even temporarily stopped taking any transfer students into the school of business.
@DRD941 You should look into the BABA program. It’s very flexible. You have to pick a specialization (out of 70 that are available), and you could/should complete a minor in a business field, You can also apply to the finance program, and if you don’t make it, I believe they place you into BABA (check with an advisor).
