Did I get lucky?

i just got accepted into warren for economics. but my grades/SAT is really below average. im so happy, but did i just get lucky?

my SAT is 1890, 3.38 unweighted GPA, 4 years of marching band, 4 years of Tech program at my school, lots of clubs, but no position, 9 ap classes. SAT II Chinese: 800, 680 on Math ii C.

did i just get lucky? :D

nah that seems pretty legit

well i got in for comunication at warren also with 3.41 W GPA 2120 SAT I, 690 760 SAT II, and like seriously no EC -.-.

they look at your weighted gpa so if you have nine ap classes I am sure your gpa is higher

pisces ucgpa is capped at 8 points of AP, so 8 semesters/4 classes.

ok thanks for the feedback

there is no getting lucky with such a competitive school. i said the same thing, but the admissions office looks for something special in each applicant, so they saw that in you too:)

I suppose. I had 50 points higher on the SAT I, a 680 sat II, and 740 math sat 2. My Unweighted GPA was .43 higher than yours and I took 7 college classes and 3 aps by nd of junior year. I was rejected, but not to say you didn’t offer a lot to the school! I am sure they saw something in you!

Congrats. :D

UCSD also puts a lot of weight on essays, more than most other campuses.

my girl got rejected 2 years ago with a 4.21 W gpa, 27 ACT, played some sports and was in acadeca. idk how she managed to get rejected, but apparently that was a tough year for UCSD. she got into CalPoly (rather easily) which was her “safety school”…tells you how competitive a student she is.

and UCSD this was her dream school… sad story.

@ajdavidson , i was under the impression that essays mattered the least at ucsd, that the rest of your app was more important. i honestly believe my essays were really not that great… but oh well.

ucsd was/is my dream school too- everything i wanted. irvine will suffice…

I thought I wrote very good essays. Spent a month constantly editing. I was also under the impression that essays do not count for much because UCSD uses a comprehensive review and the only thing I see the essays showing for the different categories they have is poor/special circumstances, none of which apply to me.

yes you were verrry verrry lucky. unless if your gpa is sooo inflated that a 3.38 UW equates to a 4.3 weighted or something

Maybe you were and maybe you weren’t. There are so many factors that can play into admissions, it’s not all about numbers you know. At this point it doesn’t matter. Take your acceptance and run.

Honestly, I feel the same way. My GPA is about 3.77, my ACT was 25, my SAT II’s were 530 in Bio and 540 in Math II. Pretty average if you ask me…

Although I was involved in extracurricular activities such as yearbook and clubs, I feel like I didn’t stand out as much as other people who were in more clubs and sports.

I feel like the only reason I got accepted was mostly because my essays were good, but hey, I’m not complaining. Just shocked.

Please keep in mind that UCSD and Davis use a point system for admissions.

Actually except for UCB and UCLA, each UC creates its own point system for admissions. Both UCSD and Davis have the info on their sites:

[UC San Diego Comprehensive Review Admission Process: Freshman Selection, Fall 2010](http://www.ucsd.edu/prospective-students/admissions/undergraduate-admissions/freshmen/process.html)
[UC Davis: Admission Criteria](Freshman Application Tips)

I heard that Davis gives 100% to test scores and 1000 points for’ courses beyond UC a-g, but I cannot confirm it.

You don’t get lucky being accepted to the like of UCSD or UCD or unlucky being rejected, and unlike UCB and UCLA, it seems essay is not a factor.

There is an interesting thread here on CC about UCSD point system cutoff:
