Did I make the right choice (Purdue vs VT)?

I was debating between Purdue and Virginia Tech for pre-med and I am having second thoughts. At Purdue, I loved the reputation but the problem was I could not get any of my questions answered because the university is so much bigger than VT. While at VT I did get my questions answered even though the university was still pretty large, and it is significantly smaller. I chose VT over Purdue and I feel like I am regretting it. Purdue internationally is ranked twice as high as VT and I am debating if I made the right choice. I also made a pros and cons list to weigh out my options and VT seemed to be the perfect fit.

If you already made your decision March on and accept it. Think about this. If Purdue is ranked higher, it may be harder to get good GPA and get into med school. No one really cares where you went premed. Gpa matters more

Purdue is better.

However one thing I did not like about Purdue was that Indiana is a very conservative state. I am definitely more progressive thinking.

Meaning, you will get a better education at Purdue. That should be your top priority, and every med school will value a Purdue degree above a Hokie degree.

To remind everyone I couldn’t get any of my questions answered regarding to dual enrolled credit. Sorry I did not mention dual enrolled credit.

@prezbucky Mind if I ask why, since I use Student Doctor Network they have strictly said it doesn’t matter where you go but what you do in your university. I will consider transferring if I must though.

Purdue is a better school. if it is close in price with VA Tech, if I were you, I would choose Purdue.

Don’t think that just because you want to go to med school, that the quality of your undergrad degree does not matter; quality of education always matters, even when it is not your terminal degree.

@prezbucky There are a lot of factors that go into rankings. The rankings I was looking at was basing it on grad schools/research anyway. Also VT’s rankings went down due to the shooting anyway since people questioned security of the school. There also proposes the question of weather or not one gets the most of their education so I understand what you mean.

Haven’t you made a commitment already? No point in second guessing your decision. Focus on the choice you have made and dig in.

If you committed to VA Tech, give your all to your school. I think Purdue is better, but you can get into good med schools if you do well as a Hokie.

Total BS. Med schools will not value one over the other.

Don’t listen to the people claiming that one is better than the other. They’re both very good science schools. Med schools are not going to prefer one over the other.

In another thread, you mention the OOS cost for VT.

Who cares if the state of Indiana is conservative. You’re going to college. The college isn’t conservative.

Are you saying in your other thread that if you go to Purdue (or IU), then you will have to use your DE credits?

mom, come on - Purdue is more highly regarded. OP will get a good education at either, but Purdue is to VT as GA Tech is to Michigan State.

You made your choice so stop thinking about it.

And I’d disagree with the analogy above. I’m not a big ranking person, but to simplify the comparisons I’m using them here… Purdue (USNWR 62) and VA Teach (USNWR 71) are so close in ranking that choosing the school where the OP feels more comfortable makes sense. On the other hand GA Tech (USNWR 35) and MI State (USNWR 85) are in different tiers.

@prezbucky You made the claim that “every med school will value a Purdue degree over a Hokie degree,” and that is 100% false. Med schools will view them as equivalents. Every time this issue is looked at, it is clear that there may be a slight bump for top 10 schools, but after that, they’re all seen as the same.

If that is true, I’ll still fall back on my secondary argument: that OP will get a(n ever so slightly) better all-around education at Purdue.

Most people would place VT and Purdue in the same ballpark. See rankings in post #13 above. In addition, people generally do better in an environment where they feel comfortable and it sounds like VT is that place for you. Don’t second guess yourself. You made a well thought out decision to attend VT. Go to VT, work hard, and make the most of your four years there.

Purdue also is famous for grade deflation. http://www.gradeinflation.com/

VT and Purdue are peers. I’m totally surprised that anyone would consider one better than the other with such enthusiasm. It makes me think they are either an alumni/fan or … not so up with their knowledge.

If looking for a job with a degree from either, I’d pick the area I wanted to live in more as VT is likely to get the nod in the east and Purdue in the center/midwest.

If looking for med school, it definitely won’t matter one iota.
