Did I screw myself over? I think I may have

I'm currently a student at community college and thought that registration for classes in the spring semester weren't until january 5th. Classes start on january 20th. People were talking about registering last week, but I didn't think much of it.
Tonight I went up to the college to find an advisor about registering, only to find that registration for current students is over, that my chances of getting into classes are slim, and that I may have to wait until january 5th to register(apparently for current students, registration has been going on since after thanksgiving, and ended on the 13th, and registration for new students is on january 5th). But the person that told me this was a receptionist at the front lobby of the whole school, not the admissions center. Now my mom thinks that I'll only be able to take part time night classes. But I do know of people who registered for classes a few days before the fall semester started, and got good, day schdeules.
I'm gonna try to call the admissions office tomorrow morning to see if I can speak with an advisor about registering online, but am I screwed?

I'm not stupid for not knowing when registration was. There was no signs indicating registration was taking place and the course booklet said that walk in registration starts on january 5th.

How much of a problem really depends on school and factors involving the school. As you are now obviously aware, registration for existing students begins much earlier than new students (and that is typical of most colleges). Nevertheless, if they have new student registration January 5 then it sounds like the school is not one where you are going to find that most courses are already filled and so if you register then you are probably going to be OK although you may be blocked out of some things and get a couple bad times. Even then, unless the college is a rare one that does not have it, you should, after registering Jan 5, have a drop and add period the first week of actual classes where students get to drop courses and add others as long as there are openings (and openings happen because someone else is dropping a course you are trying add).

Well I just found out that 2 of the classes I was planning on taking are waitlisted. I’m not sure if thats good or bad though. And yes, my school does have the add/drop thing the first week. Registration is still gonna go on a week after classes start.

Cheshire,
How did all of the other students know that registration was taking place? They all managed to register at the correct time.
do you carefully read all emails and bulletins from all the various offices at your CC, and calendar all relevant dates, and put all necessary info (phone #s, email addresses etc ) in your contacts list?

I hope you get in to all the classes you need without too much angst. I know you are looking forward to transferring to a 4 year school and I hope this doesn’t put you behind.

I think I know what I need to do now, boysx3.
