I'm hearing about everyone who filed for financial aid and are receiving their projected scholarships.

Without filing a FAFSA, do I still have a shot at admissions scholarships?

I would call and ask, but I’m pretty sure you need a FAFSA on file. I know that with D we knew she wouldn’t be eligible for financial need, but to keep her merit options open we filed FAFSA. But again, I’d call and confirm. Is it too late to file?

zebes

My understanding is that you can file your FAFSA at anytime. Last year I filed in May. Since UF had that March 15th deadline, I don’t know if they will use your FAFSA if it was filed late. Agreed with zebes, you need to call and ask but you can certainly still file the FAFSA.

Okay thanks. We called last week and they said no…but a lot of people are receiving the scholarships who have filed the FAFSA…so I was just checking

March 15 is the on-time deadline, I have gotten federal aid with a fafsa filed after that date. When I asked they said priority is given to the on time applications.

I called them after I saw this, since I don’t have a FAFSA on file either (wasn’t expecting anything). According to the Office of SFA it’s not a prerequisite to getting merit aid, the two are handled separately.

You need it for a lot of things. Loans, work study, etc. A lot of scholarships that are not necessarily need based want to see your FAFSA. Trust me, you’ll want to have your FAFSA filled out. I garuntee that you will need to do it at some point, even if your EFC is going to be very high and you are not expecting aid.

No, you don’t need to fill out a FAFSA to receive scholarships. FAFSA allows for you to receive grants and loans but not necessarily scholarships (based on academics anyway). You might be able to receive need-based scholarships based on the FAFSA but otherwise no. I thought I submitted my FAFSA but apparently I did not get it signed by my parents. Now that it is signed, UF will receive it but it will just be considered late but I received the UF President Scholarship yesterday WITHOUT a FAFSA on file strictly based off academic achievement!

Congrats! Did you find out through the mail or online?

Thank you, I found out online at ISIS, they update everyday because when I checked initially a few days ago I only saw that I will receive Bright Futures but when I checked yesterday they had added the UF scholarship.

are you a minority? I’ve heard a lot of these scholarships are going to minorities…just hoping I can still receive one

^ Yeah, he’s black and his stats are about average (low GPA and 26 ACT) so don’t count on anything.

I’m black and even I don’t think that’s fair. He didn’t have his FAFSA stuff sent, so it had nothing to do with need. UF is just really unfair with their black people crap… I got offered $5,000 for being a national merit finalist, but $22,000 for being a national achievement finalist… How backward is that??

sorry, just my mini-rant. I hate unfairness.

haha well thank you for your understanding. I have a 35 ACT and 4.0 UW, not a NMF though, but it appears I won’t be receiving any sort of aid

tebowforheisman,

D also had a 4.0 u.w. and a 35 ACT when she started in the fall. She also didn’t receive anything from UF. Thankfully, she had a couple of other merit scholarships available for her as we have two kids in college and every little bit helps.

zebes

Wow, zebes! Those are impressive stats. I would think she should be getting scholarships to an Ivy with stats like those.

Tebow is OOS though, while Zebes D was in-state.

It kind of sucks their are no scholarships available for really well qualified OOS students who really want to go UF.

Yeah…it really does. Ms Johnson actually responded to an email I sent about oos scholarships and said UF had improved their oos scholarships this year…she forgot to mention that they only go to minorities

They’re not great with their scholarships for ISS. My son received scholarships from every other school he applied to here in Florida, both public and private and some were really generous. One private school is throwing money at him. What did he receive from UF, not a thing!

SeanChris,

I don’t know what she would have had; she didn’t apply to Ivies. She wanted to stay close to home. I will say that state schools are hurting financially. H does research at GTech, and he was talking to some folks when he was there last and they were complaining that the merit aid had dried up alot and they were losing some great candidates because the state of GA was essentially bancrupt and merit scholarship were sooo down.
