Did you think differently of who I am after seeing my score, then my experiences?

I'll make this short and simple so I won't lose you guys!

READ THE BOTTOM AFTER LOOKING AT MY SAT SCORE AND GPA. Then determine if it really shows who I am when you look at my experiences. I want to know if you thought something different.

SAT SCORE 1340
MATH 470 READING 420 WRITING 450

School GPA 3.3 Unweighted (Have not taken any ap classes before)
But I'm planning to take 2 AP classes in my Senior year.

Extracurricular activities or events:

-I work for my family business. I started working at age 12. I have worked for them for almost eight years, every single day, and right after school. Working has taken most of my time during days. No time to hang with friends, no time for sports nor clubs at school.

-I'm part of a karate club that I joined a year ago. Martial arts has always been my favorite thing to do and too bad they aren't offered at high schools. I'm able to do karate because it opens on Saturdays for one hour before the business opens, and because I can drive for myself.

-I'm proud of myself for being part of this business proposal competition in junior year. My group won third place, and we actually are planning to start the business in 2015 or sometime later. This was my first competition ever. I might plan to do another competition in my Senior year.

These are the only three things that became part of my life and since I have one more year to go, as a senior, I hope to add the list.

Top schools I want to apply to:

American University
George Washington University
Umass Amherst
Babson College
St. John Fisher College
Boston University

Safety schools:

Suffolk University
Nichols College

My plan is to receive Master degree in accounting, work as an forensic accountant and/or work for the FBI. I have always wanted to work for the government.

Please tell me if you thought differently of who I am. Also, will my common application and essay look really good? Do I stand out really well and get a shot at my top schools?

Thank you so much for your time and I can't wait to hear your feedback!

I’m not entirely sure what your question is, but I’m going to try to somewhat respond to it anyway. Your experiences may be pivotal to your life. You might get a good essay or two out of them. However, having two ECs plus a job is frankly not super impressive. I understand that working every day has limited you from pursuing other things, and that’s too bad. Your scores and GPA are pretty low. If I were you, I would try taking the ACT and really really study for it. Those scores aren’t going to get into your top schools, and the rest of your application doesn’t seem strong enough to counter the poor scores.

@Ranza123‌ Thank you for your honest feedback. I was hoping to get criticism from someone here, and I’m glad you said it! I plan to continue studying for the SATs, take an ACT without studying at first to see what I really know, and keep studying for these two until I know I’m ready. Thanks again for being honest!

When you say you’re going to take an ACT without studying first, do you mean a practice one online? Don’t take an actual ACT without studying. You won’t have time to retake it if you’re going into your senior year. Sign up for the October one today, take a practice one online tomorrow, and then study for the next two months.

Your circumstances give you a “reason,” if you will, for a low gpa and also will provide for unique essays. However, no college will ever accept a student they do not believe will be able to handle their curriculum. If you want a shot at the colleges you listed, you need to prove to them that you are an intelligent student who can make it through four years of tough work, and so you need to show them this by improving your sat (or act) score. If you can get up to a 1700 or above (which will not be as hard as you think) you will have a shot at your top schools.

@Ranza123‌ Well, I already signed up for one in September, and I was planning to take that one without studying. Now that you mention that I won’t have enough time, my plan now is to study for the ACT + SAT.

For the SAT, I’ll have a twelve week studying time for the test in November. Hopefully this will be my last one.

For the ACT, I will start today to take online quizzes to practice. I’ll be taking one in September, and sign up for October. If I’m not satisfied with my score, I’ll take another one in November.

Thank you so much for the heads up, I guess I wasn’t thinking.

@rbow10 Thanks for giving me advice! And is it really not that hard to get 1700? I don’t know, I’m not as smart as my brother and sister… My brother is older while my sister is younger, which is quite embarrassing that I can’t do better. But no worries, that won’t stop me from trying! Thanks again!

Definitely don’t take an ACT without studying. That’s a waste of time and money. Study hard for the one in September. Sign up for the October one now just to be safe and then learn from your mistakes on the September ACT to do better in October. There is no November ACT, and the December one may be too late for some colleges, so I would bank on doing well on those two. If you think you can study for both the ACT and SAT, then retake the SAT in November. But I would focus all your time and energy now on the ACT since that is coming up in a month.

@ranza123 I don’t know how to thank you enough for all this planning. You even took the time to research for me. Okay I already asked my parents about taking more tests and she said it’s fine, as long as I’m trying.

Also, I don’t have the ACT prep book, but you did mention online practice… Should I just practice online or buy a prep book? I had already bought a SAT prep book for the twelve weeks.

I started my sats in the 1600s and now am probably going to end up in the 2200s. I took a class with like 6 sessions but that honestly wasn’t even too helpful. I studied by myself every now and then and before I knew it I was used to the test and am getting pretty good scores. And my advice would be to either choose the act or the sat. There’s really no point in studying for both because all colleges take one or the other. Just take an official practice test from both, choose the which you prefer, and STICK WITH IT. Studying for both will be a waste of time. Best of luck

@rbow10‌ That would have been nice… But I already signed up for the dates. Plus, who knows if I actually get a good ACT score? Maybe on my last SAT score, it might turn out good. Either way, at least I tried and did the best I could in my situation! I wished I had taken your route in the first place but I guess it’s too late to back out. But I’m not giving up! Haha thanks!

I know how you feel. I’m Asian too and I have worked in my parents store since 5th grade. I worked just like you every single day even during school. (Except I kind of had more freedom starting my junior year in hs)

I’m not trying to criticize you or anything but if you are smart enough you could definitely turn this into a touching (kind of) story for your essays. And in the mean while STUDY STUDY AND STUDY for your next SAT. Based on your description of your job, your parents seem to own a Chinese Restaurant (correct me if I’m wrong) and based on my experience once working at one, you could wake up earlier in the morning (around school time 7ish) and study for the SAT since many restaurants don’t open till 10 (again correct me if I’m wrong). Your future is in your hands good luck :)>-

@Jay2631‌ Haha you are right! Wait so are you say I should study the SAT during school time? Like during the weekends?

And don’t worry about criticizing me, I did ask for feedback hahaa’ thanks!

@NotAPlusAsian‌ Haha and I assumed you were still in summer break (bc my school year doesn’t start until September) so if you are, you could wake up at 7ish and study before work. If you’re no longer in summer break you could possibly do it at night after work (?) and the weekends. That’s what I did in previous years.

^^^ those are just suggestions, the important thing is coming up with a schedule that works with you to study for the SAT and get those scores up. Good luck :)>-

Are there good test-optional schools for accounting? These are your best bets at this point…

@Jay2631‌ yeah I should get on that now. Right now, I’m trying to get my AP homework done and they are getting in the way haha. But your suggestions are good enough for me to follow for the rest of the summer break, plus thankfully I have a free period on my school schedule for the entire year, hopefully I can get extra time! Can I ask what you got for scores?

@Catria‌ Yes, there are some out there but I prefer schools that are somewhat challenging. No worries, I’ll keep studying. I know for sure that my SAT score will improve after a twelve week study.

@NotAPlusAsian‌ I got a 1870 :frowning: it’s above average but my parents still expect more. You could definitely raise it! Best of luck

@Jay2631‌ Well it’s still good! Thanks a lot for all the tips!

As far as studying with a test prep book or online, I personally found online easier to study with, although I had like a million test prep books because my mom writes for the company that makes them haha. You can go on <a href=“ACT Test Preparation | Test Prep Resources | ACT”>ACT Test Preparation | Test Prep Resources | ACT; to take a practice test. Also, make sure you are signed up to take the ACT plus writing, because many colleges only accept that.
