Did you use the Grammatix Writing Approach on the SAT I?

If so, post the month you tested and what score you received. I heard good things about this writing approach, but I don't buy it yet fully. So if you went 100% with this approach, post here so we can see if this method reallly works or not.

JMAN, did you score a 12 on the essay?

No, i did not. Mike Barret's approach to the essay is VERY effective, but I did not practice enough with it. In my opinion, my essay was terrible, yet I recieved a 9. I used his 14 (I think it was 14, I may be wrong as I do not have the book with me at the moment) step process to write it. The process is really simple and it makes for a good essay. On the MC, the indentification of what the SAT tests on in the book is right on target. I got a 77 out of 80.

JMAN, if you used his 14 step process, wouldn't that get you a 12?

Well, yes. But what I'm saying is that I did not practice with it. Everything in his book requires practice, it is'nt like you can read it and do well. I wrote maybe 3 essays using it and my may one was definately subpar. If I had practiced more, I am sure that I would have gotten a better essay score. Regardless, the essay is worth less of the writing score and I did well enough with his writing MC techniques that it did not hurt me that much. I missed 2 MC questions.

His techniques arent for everyone, maybe I just got lucky? I dont know, but I am sure it helped me, even a little.

I've had friends who've tried grammatix, and come out with GREAT results, one of them scoring very high on the verbal section and a 11 on the essay.

At the same time, I've had friends who didn't significantly change their scores w/ grammatix or w/o.

I've seen the bok myself, I'd say he does give some good tips and insider's stuff of the SAT, but in my humble opinion, its notsome miracle book to fabulously boost your SAT score into the sky.

I got a 540 with an 8 on the essay in March.
After using Grammatix, i got a 620 with a 10 essay in May/

have no idea my eng score was beyond laughable.

I have about $600 in books for SAT and SAT II's, and when a friend just asked recently to borrow some books, I let her borrow a copy of Grammatix and Test Masters. Rocket Review remains on the shelf and is not leant out because I feel it is inferior to those two.

what is the GRAMMATIX approach to the essay? anything wildly different than kaplan or PR? I got a 10 on my essay using straight up KAPLAN (I usually got 12s in KAPLAN though)

just bump it up

Guys, I just wrote a good essay using lit/historical examples (avoid personal because my friends who used personal did worse) and took out a grammar book from the library. I went frm a 660(12) to a 800(12) with less than 2 weeks prep.

Grammatix sounds fine--but nothing beats old fashioned preparation. I found after a while I really understood the grammar principles and that's what really helped me--when I could reason WHY there was an error etc...

660 to 800 is very hard to do. I went from 540 to 620 writing, i don't do good with grammar but grammatix explained it better for me than others, plus they had a few tricks.

so sounds like Grammatix isn't a great way to get a 12?

Why wouldn't it be a great way to get a 12? I got a 10, but I only adopted a few parts of the strategy. I am a weak writer too.
